‘Why Is That Threatening To You?’: Will Ferrell Confronts Transphobia As He Explores Friendship and Acceptance in New Netflix Documentary Will & Harper

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Will Ferrell‘s work, I found his recent reflections on transphobia truly enlightening and commendable. Having grown up with Ferrell’s comedic genius gracing my screens for decades, it’s heartening to see him using his platform to shed light on such an important issue.

Comedian Will Ferrell has spoken candidly about his insights and thoughts regarding the transgender community and transphobia while promoting his upcoming documentary, titled “Will & Harper.” This film chronicles his personal journey of accepting his 30-year-old best friend as she transitioned into a woman. The movie will be available on Netflix starting September 27. During the promotion, Ferrell expressed confusion about why some cisgender heterosexual individuals perceive transgender people as a threat.

In simpler terms, during an interview with The Independent, Ferrell discussed transphobia and attempted to clarify its origins. He traced most instances of transphobia back to a fear of what is not familiar or understood.

Ferrell spoke candidly about the risks faced by trans individuals, expressing, “Trans people can find themselves in dangerous circumstances at times. However, I fail to understand why trans people pose a threat to me as a cisgender man. I don’t comprehend why Harper is perceived as threatening to me.

Ferrell didn’t avoid discussing matters concerning the transgender community and the root causes of transphobia, often stemming from fear, dislike, or perceived danger associated with being transgender. Instead, he questioned the reasoning behind anyone being repelled by someone just living honestly and authentically.

Pondering over his past perspective, he admitted it was quite peculiar to him why Harper’s true self felt threatening to him, her closest friend. He added, “What about it feels threatening to you? If your discomfort around the trans community originates from insecurity or unease within yourself, I believe that’s where it comes from.

It’s not unexpected that such openness is displayed, considering the message Will and Harper aim to share – a message fostering friendship, embracing each other, and learning or gaining knowledge.

The film focuses on Ferrell and Harper Steele, a comedian and columnist, who became friends with Ferrell during their time on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Harper revealed that she is a transgender woman, marking an important chapter in their relationship that lasted for over three decades. As per the outlet, Will had no knowledge of the trans community before Harper came out.

During an interview at the Sundance Festival, he shared with Variety that before Harper’s transition, he hadn’t personally known anyone from the transgender community. Although he had met transgender individuals, none were close friends, so Harper’s disclosure was a fresh experience for him, leading him to delve deeply into self-education about the topic.

In our narrative, we delve into the dynamic duo, Will and Harper, as they embark on an eagerly anticipated journey across America. We explore how their relationship develops in relation to Harper’s personal transformation, and how they adapt to the alterations this brings about in their bond together.

Regarding the documentary, he informed the media that it offers an opportunity for everyone within the cisgender community to pose questions, but also simply to listen and offer support during this individual’s journey.

Will Ferrell encouraged the rest of the people to avoid viewing others’ happiness as a source of a threat since it always originates from transphobic people who do not accept themselves.
