Damon Lindelof has addressed comments made by Grant Morrison, who criticized Lindelof’s previous statements about Green Lantern. Morrison had also asked why creators accept work on superhero projects if they find aspects of the source material silly.
Now Lindelof says Morrison is right to be upset and admits he handled it badly.

Damon Lindelof says he made a dumb joke
In an Instagram post, Lindelof explained that he gets why Morrison was upset about a previous comment made on a podcast and acknowledged it directly instead of avoiding the topic.
Lindelof admitted he told a silly joke during a comedy podcast appearance. He’s taking responsibility for it and won’t try to justify it, acknowledging the fans are passionate and deserve an honest explanation of how he really feels.
That is a pretty clear reversal from the earlier remark that helped fuel the Lanterns backlash.
Lindelof also opened by acknowledging exactly who he had upset.
He mentioned accidentally offending Grant Morrison, and jokingly added that this now meant he’d likely upset most of the talented British and Scottish comic book writers he admired growing up.

Says Green Lantern meant a lot to him growing up
Lindelof then made clear Green Lantern was never a property he looked down on.
He recalled his first Comic-Con panel appearance being for the pilot episode of Lost back in 2004. He remembered wearing his favorite shirt that day – a Green Lantern shirt featuring Hal Jordan.
For Lindelof, Green Lantern was personal.
He explained that, as a shy and clumsy child, he found nothing more appealing than a hero who used their imagination as their greatest strength.
He also directly pushed back on the idea that he actually thinks green is dumb.
He declared green to be his favorite color, claiming he’d known it since third grade – he even had an old questionnaire to prove it! He enthusiastically described green as simply ‘awesome’.

Lindelof defends Lanterns and praises the team
Lindelof also explained he wouldn’t want a past joke of his to seem disrespectful to the creators of Lanterns.
He emphasized that it would feel like letting down everyone he’d worked with to not express how honored he was to have been part of the team that created Lanterns – and he truly felt that way.
What’s striking is that Morrison’s critique went beyond a single joke. He felt Hollywood consistently hires people who appear uncomfortable with comic book source material and then proceed to make it bland.
Lindelof’s response is basically saying that is not where he is coming from.

Admits he was careless with his words
Lindelof closed by admitting the whole thing came down to sloppy wording.
I didn’t express myself as clearly as I should have, which is frustrating because I deeply care about Hal, John, and everyone in the Corps. I promise to be more thoughtful with my words going forward, to live up to my commitment. Until then, I’d rather let my actions demonstrate my dedication, and I’m excited for you all to see what I’ve been working on.
