Now, some people – the awfully optimistic sort – like to chatter on about the ‘utility’ of these digital doodads they call cryptocurrencies. They claim they’re the future! Humbug, I say. But one fellow, a Mr. Owen Lau from Clear Street – a name that sounds suspiciously like a back alley – seems to think Circle Internet Group’s (CRCL +8.92%) little stablecoin, the USDC, is something special. He’s upgraded his recommendation, you see. A bit like polishing a toad, really, but there you go.
The market, a rather excitable beast at the best of times, promptly snapped up Circle’s stock, sending it bouncing about like a rubber ball. More than 9% higher, they say. All because of a digital promise, a bit like believing in fairies, if you ask me.
A Virtuous Circle? More Like a Wobbly Loop
Mr. Lau has decided Circle is no longer just ‘holdable,’ but ‘buyable.’ He’s also stuck a new price tag on it – $136 a share, up from a measly $92. Quite a jump! He claims it’s because USDC is becoming frightfully popular, riding a wave of ‘tokenized financial assets’ – whatever those are. Sounds like a fancy name for thin air, if you catch my drift.
Apparently, people are now using USDC to bet on all sorts of nonsense – prediction markets, they call them. Wagering on everything from the weather to the color of a penguin’s beak. And now they’re trying to mix it with ‘artificial intelligence’ – a truly terrifying thought. It’s like giving a chimpanzee a loaded pistol. USDC, being a ‘stablecoin,’ is apparently ideal for this. Ideal for trouble, more like.
Making its Bed, and Probably Regretting It
Mr. Lau makes a perfectly good case for USDC, and by extension, Circle. But let’s not forget, these two are stuck together like glue. If USDC goes belly up, so does Circle. It’s a bit like a two-headed beast – if one head sneezes, the other catches a terrible cold. So, while USDC might have potential, I’d be a little cautious about piling into Circle’s stock. It’s a bit like building a house on a swamp – it might look lovely for a while, but it’s bound to sink eventually.
