As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over panels, posters, and promotional materials alike, I must admit that the revelation of Lewis Pullman’s six-fingered Sentry on the Thunderbolts poster left me rather intrigued.
The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems promising once more following a series of less-than-impressive films. This renewed optimism is largely due to the successful theater runs of Deadpool and Wolverine, along with the exciting news that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Victor Von Doom, set to portray the MCU’s upcoming primary adversary.
In the interim before the next two major Avengers films starring Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) plans to unveil several other projects. While all these projects are eagerly awaited, some are undoubtedly more exciting than others. One such highly-anticipated production is the Thunderbolts movie, set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
Freshly unveiled is both a trailer and a poster, leaving fans engrossed in deciphering and understanding the hidden details they’ve unearthed so far. Every day brings forth fresh theories and insights. A particular aspect of the poster that has sparked curiosity among us and the fans is something we’d love to delve into with you.
The point I want you to focus on might seem small at first glance, but it becomes apparent with a closer inspection. Here’s the poster:
As you can see, the dubious detail has been marked on the poster; you can find a reduced version of the poster on Marvel’s official site, where the left part was cut so that the fact we’re highlighting isn’t that obvious, but this version of the poster can also be found online, as you can see:

Despite any reservations, it appears that the character played by Lewis Pullman, either known as Sentry or Bob Reynolds, is depicted with six fingers in the storyline. However, if you notice the trailer, Sentry’s hands show five fingers on each hand, leading to speculation that this image might have been generated by AI.
Indeed, it’s correct that we understand that it wasn’t a real shot and digital effects were employed, possibly including AI. Typically, movie posters are created using existing images that are later altered for the final poster design before the film’s release. However, in this specific instance, things appear to deviate from the norm.
In other words, this mistake suggests that the photos in question don’t exist at all and that the Thunderbolts poster was generated by an AI program. While this isn’t a significant problem in itself, it demonstrates how frequently AI is being utilized than we might realize, and also highlights the fact that our current systems are still far from being flawless.
