Who is Dan Gilroy?

Back in the early ’80s, Gilroy established the music group known as The Breakfast Club alongside his brother, Ed Gilroy, and Madonna. However, within barely a year, Madonna decided to part ways with the band to create her own ensemble, called Emmy and the Emmys.

Throughout the 1980s, Breakfast Club maintained their musical momentum with Gilroy handling vocals, Ed playing the guitar, Gary Burke on bass, Paul Kauk manning the keyboards, and Stephen Bray beating the drums. Their first self-titled album was released in 1987, featuring one of their tracks that peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

1979 marked the first encounter between Madonna and Gilroy at a party. At that time, Gilroy and his roommate, Ed, resided in a synagogue within New York City. Meanwhile, Madonna was temporarily staying there, utilizing it not only as a dwelling place but also as a makeshift recording studio. During their shared residence, Madonna would compose songs, practice the drums, and learn to play the guitar under Gilroy’s tutelage. While they were waiting tables together, Gilroy also took time to teach her musical skills.

In 1980, when the singer from Vogue parted ways with Breakfast Club, their musical and personal bond swiftly dissolved. Now, over four decades later, Gilroy is ready to embark on a fresh phase in his life.

For 34 years prior to her death on July 11, due to diabetes-related complications, Gilroy had been in a long-term relationship with Shelley Duvall. Currently, Gilroy is offering memorabilia from his time with Madonna as part of Guernsey’s 60th anniversary celebration.
