It was a huge night for the pair, who have worked together for more than ten years on films including Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station. Their success is built on deep trust, a strong friendship, and a shared love for filmmaking – a connection that finally brought them to this achievement. Their wins also marked a significant moment for the horror genre, which is often ignored or underestimated during major awards seasons.
As a film lover, I truly believe Ryan Coogler is something special. He’s not just a good director, he’s a real visionary – the kind of storyteller I think we’ll be talking about for years to come. What impresses me most is how he keeps reaching for more, creatively, while staying genuinely himself – humble, authentic, and always true to his vision.
Ryan’s victory for his original screenplay is particularly meaningful right now, as so many films and stories are becoming uninspired reboots, remakes, or are even created by AI. It’s a win for genuine human creativity. His horror film, Sinners, perfectly captures the true spirit of the genre with its bold and brilliant approach.
Horror movies often reflect the anxieties and fears of our society, giving physical form to collective traumas, economic struggles, and deep-seated worries—even things like the exploitation of Black culture, as seen in stories about vampires. The recent awards success of this film proves that horror is a lasting and important part of entertainment. It follows in the footsteps of films like Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which also received this award in 2018, and continues to build on that foundation.
Michael B. Jordan truly earned the Best Actor Award for his performances as Smoke, Stack, and even the vampire version of Stack. It’s rare for horror films to receive this kind of recognition. In fact, only two actors have ever won Best Actor for a horror movie: Anthony Hopkins for Silence of the Lambs in 1992, and now Michael B. Jordan for Sinners in 2026. This win acknowledges the deep emotional, physical, and artistic effort that goes into many horror films, particularly those with layered and meaningful stories.
As a film lover, I’m always blown away when an actor can truly make you feel what a character is going through – the fear, the heartbreak, the anger. Michael does that consistently, and not just once, but across different roles! He’s a phenomenal talent, and it’s clear he approaches his work with the same respect and kindness that director Ryan Coogler does. You can just tell he’s completely dedicated to making every project the best it possibly can be, and that dedication shines through.
The criticism about a lack of diversity at the #Oscars (often called #OscarsSoWhite) hasn’t disappeared. While Sinners should have been even more recognized, and many of the winners were white, it’s still a positive step for the horror genre, which is finally getting the recognition it deserves at major awards shows. Hopefully, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan will continue to achieve great success in their future projects.
