As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of the MCU since its inception, I must say that the trailer for Thunderbolts has piqued my interest like never before! The idea of a team of supervillains banding together to fight a common enemy feels fresh and intriguing. Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Yelena Belova as a troubled, purpose-seeking assassin is captivating, and I am eager to see how her character develops throughout the film.
On September 23rd (Monday), Marvel Studios unveiled for the very first time the trailer of Thunderbolts, and in this preview, Florence Pugh and David Harbour reappeared as their characters Yelena Belova (previously Black Widow) and Alexei Shostakov respectively.
In the trailer, the Dune actress is leading a team of Avengers but they are a bunch of supervillains, who assembled to fight against a larger enemy. A distressed and depressed Yelena Belova (Pugh) knocks on the door of Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian (David Harbour) and future team member of the Thunderbolts to confide in. “There’s something wrong with me, an emptiness. I’m just drifting and I don’t have a purpose” Pugh’s voiceover is played over a montage of heroes facing their fall from grace.
After eliminating a shared danger, Yelena gathers a group known as the Thunderbolts to confront a larger adversary that’s pursuing them with destructive intentions. The team, much like the theme in the Pixies’ 1988 hit “Where Is My Mind?”, comes alive with famous characters such as John Walker (played by Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (portrayed by Olga Kurylenko) and Ghost (interpreted by Hannah John-Kamen).
The trailer also gave a glimpse of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine who was previously introduced in the MCU Disney+ 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. “An irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits,” says the official synopsis.
Sebastian Stan will once again embody the character of Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s counterpart, in the upcoming movie. Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, and Hannah John-Kamen are among the actors joining the cast. At the San Diego Comic Con 2024, Pugh and Harbour hinted at Marvel’s upcoming supervillain action film. The actress from We Live in Time shared that the appealing aspect of Thunderbolts is witnessing a group of individuals who “don’t get along,” coming together as a team.
In this latest portrayal, the intricacy of our characters’ bond is multifaceted, as it encompasses various dimensions, Harbour explained. There’s a sense of warmth and humor, yet his character exhibits narcissistic tendencies. On the other hand, Pugh’s character is deeply committed to taking lives. I am genuinely proud of the work we have achieved together, she concluded.
Thunderbolts is set to hit the theaters on May 2, 2025.
