As a die-hard fan of The Boys, I can confidently say that the fourth season was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and Black Noir’s return from the dead was undeniably one of the most intriguing plot twists! The behind-the-scenes events were as captivating as the on-screen action, with Nathan Mitchell going through an unexpected audition process to reprise his role.

It’s common knowledge that “The Boys” is among the world’s top-tier superhero TV series. Garth Ennis’ gritty and unconventional approach to the genre has propelled it to become one of the most watched television shows ever, with Eric Kripke’s creative direction elevating the show further in each subsequent season.

The character speaks, which is a shocker, and you can understand why everyone thinks he nailed it. Later, the actor gave an interview for TV Insider, in which he commented on the tape and the major change:

Was a video showcasing your character’s audition released? Has his character name been officially announced yet? I’m curious about your experience in exploring and adapting to the new physical aspects of this role.

As a gamer diving into the new version of Noir, he’s fresh and unfamiliar to me, yet intriguing. We had an entertaining off-screen adventure creating that tape. What makes it amusing is that I can inject more of my own personality into this character since he feels more like an everyday person. The joy lies in emphasizing his peculiar quirks, something less prevalent with the original Noir who was more stoic. I admired the impact of a subtle head tilt or any motion in the old Noir, as every move held significance. The new Noir offers a bit more freedom, allowing for a smoother flow of expressions. It’s exciting to explore this character’s expressiveness, something that was less emphasized with the original. While the old Noir was still enjoyable, this newfound expressivity adds a refreshing twist.

Did it feel foreign speaking while wearing the mask?

Absolutely, it’s something I’ve longed to do for a while now. The initial episodes made me think, “Hold on, am I supposed to be speaking here?” It took some time to get comfortable, realizing that I could occupy this space and embody this character. What’s interesting is when I read my lines, it felt like Eric [Kripke] knew me better than I thought he did because the dialogue perfectly mirrors what I would say in those moments. He’s incredibly skilled at writing for us and merging the characters with our personalities.
