A new Firefly series is in the works, and it’s animated! The original cast, including Nathan Fillion, are returning. However, a big question was whether Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly, would be involved. Given the controversies surrounding Whedon since the original series aired, that was a valid concern. The answer is no – Joss Whedon won’t be working on the new animated series, though Nathan Fillion has given it his support.
Joss Whedon won’t be directly involved in the upcoming animated Firefly series. However, Nathan Fillion revealed that getting his approval was essential for the show to move forward, and that he did receive that approval. This news is likely to be met with a range of emotions from fans.
As we’ve discussed before, Joss Whedon was a key creator of Firefly. However, his career stalled after allegations of abusive behavior on set surfaced from actors on Buffy and Angel. He was removed from his HBO series The Nevers in 2020, and the show was quickly canceled. He hasn’t worked on any projects for over five years and has no creative role in the upcoming Buffy revival, only receiving financial compensation. Interestingly, the Firefly cast has largely remained supportive of Whedon, suggesting their experiences with him differed, with Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk being particularly loyal.
It’s probably a good thing Joss Whedon isn’t working on the new animated Firefly series. The cast, rights, showrunners, and animation studio are all set to go. According to Nathan Fillion, the only thing missing is a network or streaming service to air it. You can actually watch the original Firefly right now on Hulu.
