As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for both the art of storytelling and the intricacies of human connections, I find myself deeply moved by the poignant account shared by Kelly Bishop in her memoir, “The Third Gilmore Girl.” The raw emotion that permeates through her words is palpable, underscoring the profound bond she shared with her late co-star, Edward Herrmann.
Kelly Bishop, an actor famed for her role in Gilmore Girls, remembers the moment she learned about her on-screen partner, Edward Herrmann, fighting brain cancer. Off-camera, they enjoyed a deep friendship, and their acting partnership received much praise.
In her recently published memoir titled “The Third Gilmore Girl”, Bishop describes her response upon hearing Herrmann’s diagnosis. One passage from her book recounts how she was reading a newspaper and stumbled upon a headline about Overboard actor Herrmann, causing her to be utterly surprised.
In her memoirs, the actress who played in Dirty Dancing shared that she wasn’t aware of his illness until only a fortnight prior to his passing.
As I was casually flipping through the New York Post’s Page Six, my eyes landed on a brief article about some strife between Ed and his business manager. It wasn’t until I read the phrase, “Herrmann, 71, who is bravely fighting brain cancer,” that I paused and felt a pang of empathy.
Additionally, Bishop confessed that she had gazed at the text for close to ten minutes, secretly hoping she might have misunderstood the article. She yearned deeply for the information to be false. The actress from Bunheads later admitted, “Once I exhausted all my futile explanations and allowed the truth to settle, it struck me like a cruel blow to the stomach.
Instead of making it public, Edward Herrmann kept his cancer diagnosis private. He sadly passed away in 2014 while fighting the illness. Following his death at the age of 71, his wife and manager revealed the sad news to his supporters through a statement. After hearing about Herrmann’s diagnosis, Kelly Bishop stated that she attempted to contact his wife.
Yet, the actress admitted that since she wasn’t close to Herrmann’s wife, she opted to reach out to Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino instead. Graham portrayed Herrmann’s TV daughter in Gilmore Girls, while Sherman-Palladino is the series creator. Bishop noted that both were equally stunned upon learning about the news.
The actress admitted that she found it difficult to come up with anything else besides exclamations like, “Oh my God,” and “I hope this isn’t real.
In the TV series, Edward Herrmann took on the character of Richard Gilmore, while Bishop played Emily Gilmore. Spanning over seven seasons, you can now watch all these episodes on Netflix streaming service.
