As someone who grew up with Disney and Pixar, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic about the good old days when these iconic studios focused more on storytelling than pushing agendas. Don’t get me wrong, I wholeheartedly support diversity and representation in media, but it seems like the current trend is to prioritize “The Message” over the content itself.
In the realm of cinematic productions, Disney stands as a globally renowned and influential company, recognized throughout history. Originating from animation, it has since broadened its horizons and now holds significant sway in the entertainment industry. Numerous individuals regard Disney as the trailblazer, shaping trends and setting standards within the film world.
And it cannot be denied that Disney initiated a lot of changes and many of the company’s ideas have lived and withstood the test of time, setting standards for filmmakers all around the world. The audiences also love Disney’s works, but in recent years, the popularity of the company has been declining.
In recent times, a common criticism towards Disney is that they prioritize delivering messages over the content itself. It’s clear that Disney is promoting certain messages, but the question remains: Have they crossed the line in doing so? A recent news story suggests that Disney may be modifying its internal policies to make their projects less focused on LGBTQ+ themes. Let’s examine this claim in our upcoming article.
In the past, Disney and Pixar’s animated films primarily revolved around compelling stories. While they always aimed to convey a message, it was usually a universal moral message that resonated with everyone. However, following significant societal changes like #MeToo, BlackLivesMatter, and becoming more “woke,” Disney has started to prioritize the messages themselves in their productions.
Let’s make one thing clear: ‘The Message’ isn’t harmful at all. It’s actually a blend of various social movements, such as the ‘Woke’ movement, which champions equality for all, irrespective of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, and so forth. This message emphasizes the uniqueness of each individual’s rights and demands that their uniqueness be respected without pushing an agenda or forcing conformity upon others. It’s hard to see how such a message could be considered harmful, even by those who may disagree.
It’s true that some individuals express discomfort with certain characters or representations in movies and series, such as female leads, LGBTQ+ characters, Black or Asian main characters. These preferences often lean towards straight, white male protagonists. While it’s important to respect everyone’s opinions, it’s also worth noting that this perspective can be discriminatory.
Example: The series titled “The Acolyte” has been subjected to a hidden backlash, possibly due to its diverse cast featuring female, LGBTQ+, and ethnically varied characters. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, viewers have shown disapproval; however, the issues with “The Acolyte” are not rooted in its characters – rather, they stem from problems within the storyline and potential deviations from established canon, which is distinct from any “woke culture” controversy.
When the scores from sports fans weren’t great, they believed the critics were receiving payment for giving favorable reviews. Now, let’s discuss Agatha All Along. This series openly promotes LGBTQ+ themes and does so effectively. To begin with, the critical reviews were less favorable than those from fans. Interestingly enough, even the positive fan reviews didn’t meet their expectations. It’s been suggested that the positive fan reviews are actually bots, paid by Disney to enhance the show’s reputation.
Hey there! Let’s talk about my gaming experience. It’s cool when games like “The Acolyte” receive negative fan scores because it means I can explore the game more and find its flaws. But it’s not a hate campaign or review-bombing, just honest feedback.
Indeed, we’ve previously made clear in our text that the perception that fans dictate modern TV is incorrect, as shows are primarily judged on their quality, not disapproval of woke content. However, it’s important to note that Disney has been facing difficulties with “The Message” production, but this isn’t due to the show’s message itself, but rather because the overall content was subpar.
In many of Disney’s recent productions, the stories felt forced or inferior due to a strong emphasis on promoting a specific message over the narrative itself. While it’s acceptable for a message to be present, it should seamlessly blend with the story rather than being forced upon it. A good approach is to shape “The Message” to fit the story, not vice versa. Consequently, recent reports suggest that Disney aims to reduce the explicit portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes in its movies and shows.
It’s been suggested that Riley in the movie “Inside Out 2” didn’t openly express her romantic feelings for her female friend, and Beau DeMayo mentioned that his idea for a gay romance involving Professor X in “X-Men ’97” was also turned down. However, it’s worth noting that there was one significant LGBTQ+ moment in the same series, which makes DeMayo’s claims somewhat questionable. On the other hand, fans have noticed that “Agatha All Along” is openly promoting LGBTQ+ content without any apparent issues.
Moving forward, Disney is subtly modifying its approach, and this shift could potentially yield positive results. By prioritizing storytelling once more, the content produced will be enhanced, aligning better with their core values. This adjustment may lead to a more authentic expression of their message, thereby providing fans with a more satisfying viewing experience. Naturally, there will always be both supporters and critics, but a larger number of genuine fans should appreciate shows and movies that are coherent narratively and convey powerful messages effectively. Here’s hoping the changes unfold as intended!
