PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection Is a Throwback to the Original ’90s Console

As a child of the ’90s, the original PlayStation was more than just a gaming console to me; it was a gateway to a world filled with endless adventures and camaraderie. The nostalgic excitement I felt when I first saw that iconic blue triangle is still fresh in my memory, and Sony’s announcement of the 30th Anniversary Collection has sent me right back to those days.

The debut of the original PlayStation in December 1994 significantly transformed the home entertainment industry, with lasting effects still felt today. Its distinctive design has become a staple in pop culture and continues to be as recognizable as ever thanks to its groundbreaking role in the gaming world. Despite being on its fifth version now, Sony’s original PlayStation design endures through time. Intriguingly, Sony recently unveiled a special 30th Anniversary Collection for the PlayStation, which celebrates the colors and motifs of the first console.

The latest offer boasts multiple versions of the PS5, along with its accompanying items, available for purchase. In total, you’ll find two bundled sets and three individual items up for grabs. Each will have separate offerings: one for the Digital Edition and another for the Pro Edition. Notably, only 12,300 units of the PS5 Pro Edition bundle will be produced, each individually numbered – a nod to the month and day that PlayStation first launched. This exclusive collection includes extra accessories such as PlayStation cable ties, a PlayStation logo paperclip, stickers, and a poster. A striking feature is the unique USB-C connector, which resembles the original PlayStation’s controller wire in its casing.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: “Today, we’re using USB-C for our charging cables, but let’s take a trip down memory lane when you start playing the PS5,” shares Hideaki Nishino, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group.

All the products in the collection feature nostalgic references to the original PlayStation. The collection is light gray, with the original quad-colored logo evocative of the first console. The entire collection features a special logo highlighting the 30th anniversary, including on the grips and embossing of the controllers. PlayStation shared many more hidden nostalgic details in the video below.

For enthusiasts of the original PlayStation or individuals aiming to infuse a vintage charm into their contemporary setup, there’s exciting news! This collection boasting timeless designs will be available starting Nov. 21. Pre-orders kick off on September 26, both at direct.playstation.com and selected retailers.
