Buffy Reboot Canceled At Hulu: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Kiera Armstrong Respond

Well, folks, it looks like we won’t be seeing a new Buffy series on Hulu after all. The reboot, which was hoping to bring Buffy the Vampire Slayer back to our screens, has been scrapped. Disney, who owns Hulu, has decided not to move forward with the project, ending this latest attempt to revive the iconic series.

According to reports, a new TV show was being developed as a continuation of the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ universe. Sarah Michelle Gellar was expected to make repeat appearances, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong was cast as the main character – a new, teenage Slayer.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Kiera Armstrong confirm the bad news

Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a video on Instagram explaining she was upset to announce the project was canceled.

She also expressed gratitude to Chloé Zhao, explaining that Zhao helped her reconnect with the lasting impact of Buffy, both for herself and its fans. Gellar emphasized that despite the fact a revival isn’t planned, the character’s significance remains unchanged.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong, known for her role in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, shared a message on Instagram thanking the show’s creators and fans. She also hinted that the story isn’t over, saying, “Who knows what the future will hold.”

Chloé Zhao was attached to direct

The reboot had attracted major attention because Chloé Zhao was set to direct the pilot.

Joss Whedon, the original creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, wasn’t involved in this new project. Instead of a simple remake, the idea was to continue the story with a new Slayer as the main character, and Sarah Michelle Gellar would return for occasional appearances rather than starring in every episode.

Pilot titled Buffy: New Sunnydal doesn’t move forward

Trade publications indicated the show was initially called Buffy: New Sunnydale, but Hulu ultimately chose not to move forward with it.

According to a report in Deadline, people familiar with the project said it had some flaws and that the director’s creative approach wasn’t ideally suited to the story.

Sources say Hulu was considering changes to the pilot episode as recently as this week, but ultimately decided to cancel the show instead.

Hulu may not be done with Buffy

According to Deadline, the recent Buffy reboot isn’t moving forward, but Hulu and Disney aren’t giving up on the franchise entirely. Hulu is still very interested in Buffy and is exploring other ways to bring it back in a new form. This means the Buffy universe could still be revisited, just not with the originally planned reboot.
