For more than three decades, the trading card game “Magic: The Gathering” has been a cornerstone in its genre, sparking various video games, comics, and novels. Despite numerous announcements of TV or film adaptations over the years, particularly one for Netflix, these plans never materialized. Now, it seems that “Magic: The Gathering” is resurrected on Netflix. The streaming platform has officially confirmed that a “Magic: The Gathering” animated series event is currently in production, with Terry Matalas taking the reins as showrunner. Known for his work as showrunner of “Star Trek: Picard’s” third season and the creative mind behind Marvel Studios’ upcoming series about the Avenger, the Vision, Matalas will provide the primary creative direction for this project.
The recently unveiled “Magic: The Gathering” event series is a collaboration between Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast, who have held ownership of the franchise for many years. A few years ago, they revealed that Brandon Routh from “Superman Returns” and “Legends of Tomorrow” was cast in the main role for a Netflix series based on Magic: The Gathering. However, this specific adaptation never progressed beyond the concept stage. Brandon Routh recently disclosed to Collider that despite recording dialogue for it, Netflix ultimately abandoned the project he was involved in.
