Prime Video is increasing its monthly cost for ad-free viewing in the U.S. Starting April 10th, instead of paying extra to remove ads, users will switch to a new plan called Prime Video Ultra, which costs $4.99 per month.
Amazon is updating its Prime Video plans about two years after initially adding ads. The new top-tier plan will cost $2 more per month, but comes with several upgrades. Subscribers will now get 4K/UHD streaming, Dolby Atmos audio, and be able to stream on five devices at the same time. They’ll also be able to download 100 titles for offline viewing, up from the previous limit of 25.
Amazon explained the price change by saying it costs a lot to keep its streaming technology up-to-date and offer a wide variety of content. The company stated that offering ad-free streaming with high-quality features requires substantial investment, and this new plan is similar to those offered by other major streaming services, giving customers choices in how they watch.
A yearly subscription to the new ‘Ultra’ plan will cost $45.99. Existing Prime members will continue to get basic streaming benefits with their current membership, which remains at $14.99 per month or $139 per year.
However, those standard Prime members will now be limited to HD/HDR and Dolby Vision quality, with a maximum of four devices streaming at once and 50 downloads for offline viewing. Even with the ‘Ultra’ plan, some live events and sports broadcasts will still include advertisements.
Prime Video has quickly become a streaming giant, thanks to popular shows like Fallout – which is coming back for a third season – and the action-packed series Reacher. Both shows attract huge audiences. The platform also features other hits, including the crime drama Scarpetta with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, and the new mystery series, Young Sherlock.
The platform has a lot of exciting content planned for the rest of the year to keep viewers hooked. Many fans are especially looking forward to the last season of the popular show The Boys, and a new series about Legally Blonde called Elle, which Reese Witherspoon is helping to produce.
No matter if you prefer watching new movies online or getting lost in a great TV series, the way we enjoy digital entertainment is always changing. Prime Video continues to be a popular choice, offering a wide variety of content – everything from suspenseful thrillers to fun reality shows.
