As a dedicated follower of Florence Pugh’s career, I have to say that her dedication and versatility never cease to amaze me. From blockbusters like Dune: Part 2 and Oppenheimer to indie gems like We Live in Time, she continues to push herself to new heights. It’s inspiring to see an actress who is not only incredibly talented but also unafraid to take risks and challenge herself.
Florence Pugh has consistently produced successful films, including Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning “Oppenheimer” and Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated “Dune: Part 2.” Currently wrapping up work on Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” she is also busy promoting her upcoming romantic drama, “We Live in Time.” In other words, she has been working tirelessly for some time.
Although she is known as a hardworking actress, she recently acknowledged that she required a well-deserved rest. In her conversation with British Vogue, she mentioned this was the first time in her career that she had requested a summer break. Last year, she had an insightful moment about all the life experiences she had missed out on and decided to take some time off work.
Following her summer vacation, Pugh attended the world premiere of her movie “We Live in Time” at the Toronto International Film Festival alongside her co-star Andrew Garfield. This movie is a heartrending and uplifting love tale that unfolds over a decade, featuring Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh). Their paths cross accidentally, they fall in love, create a life together, and face a significant struggle as one. Directed by John Crowley, the film presents an unconventional narrative style, moving across various timelines.
It starts with Almut’s cancer diagnosis and is followed by key moments from her and Tabias’ life — their first meeting, birth of their daughter etc. To film the scenes where Almut is battling the terminal illness, Pugh had to appear bald. The actress took the leap and shaved her head in real life and called it a “no-brainer.”
She shared details about a scene where her character undergoes the dramatic action of shaving her head, as shown in the preview, and ensuring it appeared and felt genuine was crucial. “It’s a privilege to perform an act that aligns completely with your character,” she concluded.
Despite finding it strange and having an unsettling impact on her, she confessed that her head became extremely sensitive with many people trying to touch it. “It felt so alive,” she reminisced. “My body reacted with a form of shock, I was constantly cold.” Nevertheless, she bravely stuck to her character, which is characteristic of her.
We Live in Time will be released in theaters on October 11.
