Small Things Like These TRAILER: What Happens When Cillian Murphy Unveils Dark Secrets Of The Catholic Church In His First Role Post Oppenheimer? Watch

As a devoted cinephile with a penchant for tales that delve deep into the human psyche and societal issues, I am utterly captivated by Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Bill Furlong in “Small Things Like These.” The haunting trailer transports me back to the dark history of Ireland, a period I have always been fascinated by.

In the film “Small Things Like These,” Cillian Murphy takes on the roles of both Bill Furlong, a family man and coal dealer, and the story unfolds against the somber past of the Irish Catholic church. This Lionsgate production is set to hit cinemas globally starting from November 8.

In the preview, the character portrayed by Peaky Blinders actor Furlong stumbles upon shocking acts of mistreatment within a nearby convent. The line “Be careful with what you mention, concerning what’s happening there” functions as both a caution to the protagonist and a hint about the sinister direction the story might take for viewers. As the trailer unfolds, it becomes apparent that there are even deeper, unsettling secrets hidden within this local convent that continue to torment Furlong.

As I watched the trailer unfold, I found myself deeply moved by the character Murphy, who seemed troubled morally following a harrowing incident during his usual coal delivery rounds to the convent. There’s a young girl trying desperately to stay away, yet her mother insists and compels her to enter. The girl’s cries for help and pleas to stop resonated through the air, but Furlong could only watch helplessly, unable to intervene in the situation. He was left uncertain about what action to take, and though he remained inactive, the haunting image of that moment lingered in his mind.

The story unfolds in December 1985, right before Christmas. Furlong must persist with his deliveries at the convent, uncovering extraordinary occurrences along the way. However, his moral compass is tested when he starts to discover the sinister truths hidden behind the convent’s closed doors.

Throughout the trailer, Furlong is warned not to reveal anything he’s just seen. Can he keep quiet and carry on living?

The novel “Small Things Like These” is derived from a work penned by Claire Keegan, an acclaimed author, and it delves into the authentic Irish history surrounding the Magdalene Laundries. These establishments, run by the Catholic Church, claimed to ‘reform’ or ‘redem’ women deemed morally flawed through work and education. However, they were sparsely inhabited and often subject to abuse.

Instead, they gained infamy for mistreating unmarried mothers and other vulnerable females. It wasn’t until 1996 that the last of these establishments closed down, yet it was their abusive actions towards the church that eventually brought wider attention to the issue.

As per Murphy’s perspective, he believes that art can be a more delicate approach to tackling or confronting issues compared to official government documents or scholarly papers. In relation to the story, the Oppenheimer actor explained to Vanity Fair that it appears straightforward but is intricately complex when examined closely. It’s deeply entwined with Irish people, history, culture, and collective trauma.

In addition to Murphy, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Alan Moloney, the film is also produced by Catherine Magee and Drew Vinton. Furthermore, Affleck, Kevin Halloran, and Joe Michael serve as executive producers.
