READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME Is a Bloody Good Sequel (Review)

Sequels seem to be everywhere these days, especially in horror – just look at Scream 7. They can be great, but they often disappoint. However, I really enjoyed Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The first movie didn’t necessarily call for a sequel, but I’m glad we got one! It’s exactly the wild, bloody follow-up fans were hoping for.

I absolutely love slasher movies! From iconic films like Scream to newer hits like the Fear Street trilogy, I’m a big fan of the classic “masked killer versus the final girl” story. I really enjoyed Ready or Not when it came out – a wealthy, cult-like family hunting their new bride? It was perfect! I even think Samara Weaving’s character, Grace, is one of the best final girls in recent years. So, I was thrilled to hear they were making a sequel, and it definitely lived up to my expectations.

I just saw Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, and wow, they really turned up the heat! The first movie had one messed-up family, but this time it’s an entire organization of killers – it’s all or nothing! There are some seriously inventive and fun kills that I don’t want to ruin for anyone, but trust me, they’re good. And to make things even more intense, Grace isn’t just fighting for her own life this time. Her sister, Faith, gets pulled into the deadly game too, which adds a whole new layer of tension.

Samara Weaving returns for the sequel and is joined by a fantastic cast including Kathryn Newton, Elijah Wood, Shawn Hatosy, and horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar. The actors really shine, with their constant arguing and clever attempts to one-up each other making the movie highly entertaining. Compared to the first film, this one has a stronger comedic element, though it’s still full of violence and suspense. In fact, it’s even more graphic and bloody than the original – we’re talking a seriously large amount of fake blood! It wouldn’t be shocking to learn that half the budget went towards it.

The story continues right after the dramatic events of the first film: Grace is found covered in blood and wearing a ripped wedding dress in front of the burning Le Domas mansion. Though she barely escaped a terrifying sacrificial game, things are far from over. Instead of finding peace, Grace is now accused of murder, and the police don’t understand what really happened to the Le Domas family. To make things even worse, five even more dangerous families are now hunting her. Grace and her sister, Faith, who was caught up in the chaos, are captured, proving the deadly game is far from over.

Grace and Faith are in a high-stakes situation where everything is on the line. The powerful families are searching for someone to eliminate, and this time, the victor will gain complete control of the world. Throughout it all, Elijah Wood plays a detached lawyer who mostly observes the events.

Okay, so the sequel really digs into family this time around, and it works. We barely knew anything about Grace’s history in the first film – just that she was adopted. It’s great to finally get some backstory! The introduction of her sister, Faith, creates a really compelling dynamic, and their strained relationship adds a lot of tension as they’re trying to survive. They have to learn to work together, and it’s a believable struggle. It’s not just Grace and Faith either; the established council families are also dealing with their own messy relationships, particularly those Danforth twins – seriously, those two are complicated.

The game Ready or Not: Here I Come expands on the story and background of the Ready or Not universe. The families hunting Grace and Faith, who worship the devil, are known as the council families, and they essentially run the world. Their power comes from a ring that whoever possesses controls everything. Given the shocking ending of the first game, I expected the sequel to be even more ambitious – and it definitely delivers. It’s a relentlessly violent experience that’s not for the faint of heart.

Okay, so even though it might sound like I’m totally gushing, this movie isn’t flawless. There are definitely moments where the rhythm feels a little off, and let’s be real, it’s not some deep, artistic masterpiece. But honestly, it doesn’t need to be! It’s a pure, ninety-minute thrill ride meant to be enjoyed with zero brainpower, and it delivers on that promise. And Samara Weaving? She’s cemented her status as a true scream queen in my eyes, and I absolutely love her in this!

Ready or Not: Here I Come hits theaters on March 20.
