I’m getting so excited! The Oscars are almost here – just a week away on March 16th – and I’ve been taking a look at some of the films that are most likely to win Best Picture. It’s going to be a great night!
This week, Spling explores three uniquely strange and captivating works: the wildly imaginative and unsettling Bugonia, the grand and atmospheric Frankenstein, and the beautifully melancholic Train Dreams.

Looking for something to watch this weekend? Hi, I’m Spling, and welcome to WKNDwatchlist! With the Oscars just around the corner on March 16th, let’s check out three of the most strikingly unusual films from the past year.
Bugonia
Yorgos Lanthimos, the director, and Emma Stone team up again in Bugonia, a darkly funny and thrilling film. The story follows two conspiracy theorists who kidnap a CEO, convinced he’s an alien, leading to a tense and unsettling standoff. Jesse Plemons delivers a chillingly realistic performance, and Emma Stone’s strong character keeps you guessing. Bugonia is a captivating and suspenseful look at current anxieties and the excesses of the corporate world.
Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is an epic and beautifully dark fairy tale. While Oscar Isaac gives a fantastic performance, Jacob Elordi truly shines as the deeply emotional and surprisingly sympathetic Monster. The film is visually stunning, creating a unique atmosphere by mixing elements of action and heartwarming story. Despite being a bit long, its captivating beauty and richly detailed world make it a memorable and essential reimagining of the classic story.
Train Dreams
I just finished watching Train Dreams, and it’s a film that truly stays with you. Set in the beautiful, wild landscape of the Pacific Northwest, it’s a deeply moving story about what we lose when we chase progress. Joel Edgerton delivers a captivating performance as a quiet, introspective logger grappling with his own demons, and William H. Macy is utterly fantastic in a supporting role. It’s a deliberately paced, almost dreamlike experience – reminding me a bit of Into the Wild in its spirit – and it’s a film that respects its audience, letting the story unfold without needing constant explanation. Honestly, it’s one of those movies that continues to resonate long after you’ve seen it.
