Daniel Vávra, a well-known video game writer and director from the Czech Republic, has shared his thoughts on the use of AI in gaming once more. He believes AI could allow game studios to create larger and more complex games even with limited resources and shorter development times.
Following CD Projekt Red’s recent preview of the new Witcher 4 engine, developer Vávra suggested that AI could help smaller teams create large-scale games, reduce demanding work conditions (crunch), and accelerate processes like translation, animation, and creating game worlds.
He believes AI doesn’t need to eliminate developer jobs. Instead, Vávra envisions AI helping teams accomplish more with their current staff – creating bigger games with more content, more lively characters, and quicker translation and voiceovers, all while reducing dependence on slow and costly development methods.
Many people have rightly noted that his ideas aren’t practical, particularly now that AI and the databases powering it are causing significant problems in the tech industry. It’s also doubtful that CEOs of large companies will prioritize ethics and avoid laying off workers who could be replaced by AI – and frankly, it’s almost certain they won’t.
Currently, there’s no unified agreement within the industry about how to handle AI. Some studios are limiting its use to their own internal processes, while others are having to address public concerns and explain previous AI projects that didn’t go as planned.
Vávra has left his position as the head of game development at Warhorse Studios. While he’s still with the company, he’s now working on media projects like a live-action adaptation of Kingdom Come, and other creative leads will be taking over future game development.
