As an ardent Britney Spears fan with over two decades of musical journey under my belt, I must say that I am utterly smitten by Sabrina Carpenter’s recent tribute at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The way she seamlessly blended elements from Spears’ iconic discography into her electrifying performance was nothing short of genius.
On Thursday, following the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards broadcasted on Wednesday, Britney Spears finally shared her thoughts regarding the event where numerous artists paid tribute to her. However, it was the day after that Spears responded via Instagram to Sabrina Carpenter’s performance.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I recently witnessed an extraordinary spectacle: a mesmerizing medley of my three favorite tracks – Espresso, Taste, and Please Please Please – by the talented Carpenter. She seamlessly incorporated a catchy excerpt from Spears’ iconic hit, Oops!…I Did It Again, when the first song transitioned into the second. The performance reached an unprecedented level of excitement when she playfully mimicked the iconic moment between Britney and Madonna by sharing a friendly kiss with an alien on stage – a delightful nod to their 2003 groundbreaking act.
Britney Spears shared in her latest video that she only saw YouTube snippets of Sabrina’s performance rather than the full show. She said, “I don’t get why she’s kissing an alien on stage! I absolutely love her. I’d die for her. I didn’t grasp that part. Why didn’t she kiss another girl? That was strange. But I also thought the entire thing was a bit bizarre.
As the crimson carpet unfolded under my star-struck feet, I couldn’t help but share my thrill. “Sabrina, she called out my name on the red carpet,” I gushed, feeling a strange mix of surprise and validation. It’s easy to forget, amidst the hustle and bustle of fame, that I am Britney, a mother and someone who shines brightly like gold. But in that moment, as the reel wound down, I couldn’t help but appreciate Sabrina’s acknowledgement.
At the 2003 VMAs, Britney Spears shared a kiss with Madonna during their joint performance alongside Christina Aguilera. Similarly, in the Taste music video, there’s a scene where Sabrina and Jenna Ortega exchange a kiss.
In addition to delivering an outstanding show at UBS Arena in New York, Carpenter clinched her initial Moon Person trophy at the 2024 VMAs. Her song “Espresso” was recognized as the best of the year. The music video for this track garnered over 160 million views and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
