As a long-time fan of ‘The Boys’, I was deeply saddened and disappointed to hear about Valorie Curry‘s unfortunate experience at the Northern Ireland Comic Con. It’s truly disheartening to see that some fans, who should be celebrating the art and creativity behind the series, cross the line into inappropriate behavior.
In its fourth season, ‘The Boys’ has stirred up a mix of opinions online, with some criticizing it for being too politically charged and having poorer writing compared to previous seasons. However, the show has also seen impressive viewership numbers, indicating a strong audience interest. Among the factors drawing viewers in is the introduction of new characters – Firecracker, played by Valorie Curry, and Sister Sage, portrayed by Susan Heyward.
The character Firecracker significantly enriched the series with her portrayal of figures shrouded in conspiracy theories and extreme right-wing ideologies, and it’s been verified that she was modeled after Republican conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Currently, Valorie Curry is quite prominent among ‘The Boys’ characters, making her a frequent guest at fan events. However, one particular gathering recently turned sour, leading the actress to express her discomfort on social media.
At the Northern Ireland Comic Con held in Belfast, Valorie Curry experienced disrespectful conduct from two people who claimed to be fans. While she hasn’t given specific details about the events, it’s clear that she strongly disapproves of the inappropriate behavior in a video she shared online.
Hello there! I’ve just returned from the first day at Comic-Con in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Overall, the people were wonderful – I’m new to attending these conventions alone, but most everyone has been incredibly kind, considerate, and respectful. (…) However, it’s important we discuss boundaries and appropriate behavior.
I know people saw a character that I played do some pretty extreme things – on The Boys. I don’t care if you’re in costume. I don’t care if you are in character. It’s not okay and it’s not funny to demand those things from me in person at my booth.
I find what happened today unacceptable. In fact, I’ve made it clear that it was not acceptable, yet it seemed to infuriate the person who did it and their companion. I didn’t believe an explanation was necessary, but I felt very uneasy. My discomfort was quite obvious. I truly hope to participate in [conventions] without such incidents occurring.
I really enjoy getting to meet the fans and talk about the characters that I played – honestly, I really love it. I want to be able to do this. I’m not going to be able to do [conventions] if people are acting this way because it makes me so uncomfortable and honestly you should know better. Everybody else knows better, and again, I don’t know what reaction you were looking for [because] nobody was laughing.”
Although the initial event remained undisclosed by the actress herself, certain details emerged from fans who appeared to be present at the convention. The event took place when Curry was accosted by a fan wearing a Homelander costume, who requested her to nurse him.
The demand was an attempt to imitate a well-known scene from the most recent season of the series, where Curry’s character discovers Homelander has a fondness for breast milk and takes medication to produce milk herself, presumably to win his favor by nursing him. This scene sparked much debate and echoed earlier seasons, as it was shown that Homelander is vulnerable to breast milk.
Allegedly, the fan dressed as Homelander came with a friend who encouraged the behavior.
