MTV VMAs 2024: Eminem Kicks Off Show With Iconic Throwbacks And The Death of Slim Shady Hits

As a dedicated fan who has followed Eminem since the early 2000s, I can confidently say that his performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards was nothing short of spectacular. It’s like time travel, getting to relive those iconic moments from two decades ago, but with a fresh twist. The Houdini performance was a nod to his hit Without Me, and the return to the VMA stage after a brief hiatus felt like a homecoming.

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Eminem evoked a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the early 2000s, when he first skyrocketed to fame. Similar to his performance at the 2000 VMAs, Slim Shady put on an energetic show featuring numerous doppelgangers dressed in black tees and bleached blond wigs.

Eminem recreated a famous moment by performing Houdini, the lead single from his new album “The Death of Slim Shady,” which is reminiscent of his hit Without Me released in 2003. He returned to the stage to perform Somebody Save Me with Jelly Roll, marking his first performance at the VMAs since his 2022 collaboration with Snoop Dogg. Eminem had previously opened the VMA stage in 2010, when he performed Love the Way You Lie featuring Rihanna.

Currently, Recovery, also known as the Rapper, holds the title for the highest number of Moon Man awards won by a hip-hop artist, with a total of 15. He’s amassed 67 nominations, making him the second most nominated artist in VMA history, just behind Madonna who has earned 71 nominations.

Following the anticipation, Eminem took the stage at the VMAs a day after he revealed via Instagram that the Extended Version of his album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) would be released on Friday the 13th.

He showcased the premium version in a video shared on X (previously known as Twitter). In this clip, he is depicted at a convenience store, tossing a milk carton with a “missing” advertisement, except for his other half Slim Shady. As he exits the store, the producer Alchemist appears and cautions him not to return again.

On September 11 at the MTV Video Music Awards, a variety of artists such as Katy Perry, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J, Shawn Mendes, GloRilla, Camila Cabello, Rauw Alejandro, Benson Boone, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz, and several others, performed.
