Surprise One Piece Season 2 Cameo Scene Introduces Live-Action Sabo

The first episode of One Piece season two finds the Straw Hat Pirates arriving in the lively town of Loguetown. There, they face trouble when Luffy’s old enemies, Alvida and Buggy the Clown, join forces to try and defeat him. Luffy narrowly escapes thanks to a strange lightning strike – which might not have been a coincidence – and help from a mysterious figure named Dragon. As Dragon, revealed to be Luffy’s father Monkey D. Dragon, watches Luffy sail away, the camera focuses on a surprising sight: Sabo, a well-known character from One Piece, appears much earlier in the series than fans anticipated. The arrival of live-action Sabo in season two has shocked viewers everywhere!

Who Is One Piece‘s Sabo?

So, who exactly is Sabo from One Piece, and why does the first episode of the live-action season two show him with Luffy’s father? Sabo is Luffy and Ace’s adoptive brother, and he’s also been trained by Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon. However, these two relationships happened at different times. Sabo became friends with Luffy and Ace long before Dragon helped save his life. By the time Dragon got involved, Luffy, Ace, and Sabo had already gone their separate ways. It’s a complicated family history, so let’s take a closer look.

Sabo, Ace, and Luffy Became Brothers as Children

Luffy, Ace, and Sabo grew up as close friends. When they first met, Luffy hadn’t yet met his father, Monkey D. Dragon, as he’d been left in Garp’s care as a baby. Garp raised both Luffy and Ace – whose father was a famous pirate – like sons, and the two boys became brothers. They later befriended Sabo, and the three quickly bonded. Sabo, unlike Luffy and Ace, knew his family – wealthy nobles – but disliked them. At the time they met, Sabo was living as a wanderer in a scrapyard called Gray Terminal in the Goa Kingdom. For a while, the three boys were looked after by Curly Dandan, who Garp had asked to watch over them. They all had a great time together, becoming like brothers and promising to one day become pirates as a team.

Sadly, Sabo’s difficult family and the cruel nobility caused him to become separated from his friends. His parents attempted to make him return home, and during that time, he discovered the nobles of the Goa Kingdom planned to burn down the Gray Terminals, along with everyone living inside. Sabo tried to escape and warn his friends, but the fire had already begun.

Monkey D. Dragon Saves Sabo’s Life

During the chaos of the fire, Sabo meets Monkey D. Dragon, a Marine, and angrily accuses him and the nobles of being just as corrupt as the worst people in the Gray Terminals, which deeply affects Dragon. Sabo then attempts to leave his past and the city behind on a fishing boat, but the Marines violently attack it. Luffy and Ace think Sabo has died, but Dragon actually saves his life, though Sabo loses his memory in the process.

Sabo Becomes Monkey D. Dragon’s Right-Hand Man

The events at Grey Terminal and the tragic God Valley Incident cause Monkey D. Dragon to lose faith in the Marines, leading him to create the Revolutionary Army. Separately, Sabo, suffering from amnesia and having forgotten his past – including Luffy and Ace – joins the Revolutionary Army and dedicates himself to their cause. He quickly becomes a key figure, eventually rising to the position of Chief of Staff – Dragon’s second-in-command. This close working relationship means Dragon and Sabo train and collaborate frequently.

Although Ace and Luffy were originally like brothers, Ace later became connected to Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon, through adoption. However, these two parts of Ace’s life – his bond with Luffy and his connection to Dragon – never overlapped. Dragon himself isn’t aware of the strong relationship between Luffy and Sabo.

Sabo’s Live-Action Appearance in Loguetown Confirms a Long-Time Fan Theory

The fact that Luffy and Sabo nearly crossed paths in One Piece season two, episode one, is particularly impactful. This moment doesn’t appear in the original anime or manga, but it feels completely logical. Fans have often wondered if Sabo accompanied Monkey D. Dragon to Loguetown around that time, and it makes sense considering Dragon specifically mentions heading there and asks Sabo about the local leadership – it would have been easy for Sabo to join him.

For a long time, fans have speculated that Sabo was secretly in Loguetown with Monkey D. Dragon. They’ve pointed to a couple of panels in chapter 98 of the One Piece manga, showing a figure that strongly resembles Sabo, as potential proof. The character’s tall hat and suit certainly look like something Sabo would wear. Now, it appears the second season of the live-action One Piece series has confirmed this fan theory as part of its official storyline. It’s great to see the show paying such close attention to what its fans are thinking and suggesting!

Will Luffy and Sabo Meet in One Piece Season 3?

Sabo currently doesn’t remember Luffy, so even if he witnessed Monkey D. Dragon rescuing his brother, it didn’t register in his memory. Sabo’s brief appearance in the second season of the live-action One Piece doesn’t likely mean Luffy and Sabo will reconnect before they do in the original story. A major change to the plot seems unlikely. However, that’s what makes this cameo so well done. It wasn’t a forced plot point or just a treat for fans; it was a logical addition that fits the overall story and adds extra depth for those already familiar with the anime and manga.

Who Plays Live-Action Sabo on One Piece Season 2?

It’s still a mystery who plays Sabo in the second season of the live-action One Piece. The actor isn’t listed in the show’s credits, which might mean they haven’t officially cast someone for the role yet and instead used a background actor for his brief appearance.

One Piece season two is now streaming on Netflix.
