As a devoted fan who has eagerly awaited the release of “The Winds of Winter” since the final pages of “A Dance with Dragons,” I must say, George R.R. Martin‘s latest entry on his “Not-a-Blog” left me feeling like a maester lost in the dark and cold reaches of the North. The small updates on his progress feel like crumbs from Winterfell, just enough to keep us hoping for more.
Previously, George R.R. Martin unleashed a fiery post about “House of the Dragon” on his blog, which was later removed. Now, he’s back on his non-blog platform with a more subdued, yet still melancholic entry. In his latest posting, there’s a minor update on “The Winds of Winter,” but like a dark and fearful night, he hints at ongoing issues with HBO and “House of the Dragon.
In a blog post titled “Late Reflections,” Martin shared about his hectic summer schedule and travels, as well as the ongoing difficulties he’s faced since the early-year passing of his friend Howard Waldrop. These challenges have left him feeling quite stressed. Sadly, he mentioned that he hasn’t found much comfort or relaxation in his work, even though he has been working.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for updates from George R.R. Martin on his upcoming books, specifically “The Winds of Winter” and the sequel to “Fire & Blood,” titled “Blood & Fire.” In his recent sharing, he confided that writing has been challenging for him, and although he managed to create some fresh pages for both works, he wishes he could have produced more.
It’s clear that “some” is preferable to “none,” but the slight modification by Martin doesn’t quite meet expectations following the extended postponement of “The Winds of Winter.
Martin admitted that his TV commitments had an impact on his subpar writing performance. Although Martin considered some of these TV tasks worthwhile, it appears that the less desirable ones might refer to “House of the Dragon“. This is a simplified version of what he stated about his TV work:
A considerable portion of it was enjoyable (specifically DARK WINDS and THE HEDGE KNIGHT), but the majority wasn’t. The tension escalated, the news progressively worsened from bad to worse to terrible, my emotions oscillated between anger and hopelessness, and during the night, I struggled to sleep when I should have been resting. When I did manage to fall asleep, unfortunately, my dreams weren’t particularly pleasant either.
As a devoted fan, I’d say “Anguish and dismay” encapsulates his highly anticipated post detailing his concerns about House of the Dragon. Mentioning The Hedge Knight positively indicates that his dissatisfaction isn’t aimed at HBO as a whole. Unlike his previous post, this one is more nuanced and indirect. This time, he chose to express his thoughts subtly, avoiding direct confrontation, allowing us to interpret his feelings between the lines.
In today’s circumstances, understanding the hidden meanings seems to be our best bet regarding Martin’s “The Winds of Winter”. However, let me assure you, George, that we understand how busy you must be with everything on your plate.
