In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, she talked about the difficulties of becoming famous so young and the importance of staying authentic.

Rachel Zegler became well-known at age 17 when she was cast as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. She got the part after competing against over 30,000 other actresses. Even with this successful debut, she unfortunately received some criticism regarding her background.

Some questioned her Puerto Rican heritage when she was cast in West Side Story, and later, her Colombian background for Snow White. She described it as a confusing time, especially being in her early twenties, but emphasized that she wouldn’t change who she is to make others feel more comfortable.
