Rachel Zegler Fires Back at Backlash Over West Side Story and Snow White Roles

Rachel Zegler, a 24-year-old actress from New Jersey, recently discussed the negative feedback she received for her roles in the movie West Side Story and Disney’s live-action Snow White. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, she talked about the difficulties of becoming famous so young and the importance of staying authentic.

Rachel Zegler became well-known at age 17 when she was cast as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. She got the part after competing against over 30,000 other actresses. Even with this successful debut, she unfortunately received some criticism regarding her background.

Rachel Zegler shared that she faced criticism for not fitting certain expectations in her roles. Some questioned her Puerto Rican heritage when she was cast in West Side Story, and later, her Colombian background for Snow White. She described it as a confusing time, especially being in her early twenties, but emphasized that she wouldn’t change who she is to make others feel more comfortable.

Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, faced increasing criticism after sharing her thoughts on the classic film and expressing her political views online. Although some of her comments caused disagreement, she hasn’t taken back anything she said. Zegler explained that she always speaks her mind, stating, “I’ve said what I feel, and that will always be a testament to my core beliefs as a human. That’s where I stand.” She also realized this experience taught her that good intentions don’t always translate to positive results, and that real change requires more than just social media posts. “You live and you learn… there are a lot of opportunities to make more meaningful change than a tweet,” she said.

I’ve been so impressed watching Rachel Zegler navigate everything. It’s amazing how she just keeps shining, even with all the negativity online. I recently heard about her performance in Evita on the West End, and it sounds incredible – she’s clearly a phenomenal talent, not just on screen! She’s also spoken about how much her family helped her chase her dreams, from affording singing lessons when she was young to supporting her with travel for auditions. It’s so clear they believed in her from the start, and it’s wonderful to see her succeeding.

Looking back on her experiences, Zegler spoke about how important it is to be proud of where you come from and to stay true to yourself. She explained, “Growing up, I was really proud of my Colombian heritage – I loved the food, clothes, and coffee. But it felt like when you’re seen as having two identities, people don’t fully recognize either one.”

Rachel Zegler’s experience sheds light on the challenges young actors from diverse backgrounds often encounter in Hollywood. She demonstrates a strong commitment to her work and a steadfast belief in who she is, even when facing public attention and judgment.
