Kate Winslet has joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
The Academy Award-winning actress will star in the new Lord of the Rings movie directed by Andy Serkis, but her role is currently being kept secret.
This new casting brings another well-known actor to the project set in Middle-earth, expanding the already impressive list of stars involved.
Kate Winslet Joins The Lord of the Rings
As reported by Deadline, Andy Serkis and producer Peter Jackson spent a significant portion of last year persuading Kate Winslet to join the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
The part is described as the female lead, but Warner Bros. has not revealed the character.
I’m hearing Kate Winslet and her family are planning a big move to New Zealand! Apparently, she’ll be there filming something from late May all the way through October – that’s a long shoot, but New Zealand is a beautiful place to spend that time, isn’t it?
The actress has worked in the country before and has a prior professional relationship with the director. Early in her career, she filmed the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures, directed by him, in New Zealand.
Production and Release Details
Filming for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to begin in New Zealand later this year. Ian McKellen, who plays Gandalf, has confirmed his return and expects shooting to start in July.
Andy Serkis directed the movie and reprises his role as Gollum. The story takes place between Bilbo’s birthday celebration and the journey to the Mines of Moria, exploring what Gollum was up to during that time.
The team who made the original Lord of the Rings films – Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens – are also producing the new movie.
Warner Bros. has announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released on December 17, 2027. This will be the first live-action Lord of the Rings movie made since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came out in 2014.
Returning Cast
Ian McKellen will definitely be back as Gandalf. Elijah Wood has suggested he might return as Frodo, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
