As a lifelong fan of musical theater, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about Disney+’s announcement to reimagine The Phantom of the Opera for a YA audience. On one hand, I remember vividly the thrill of discovering this hauntingly beautiful story in my teenage years, and it’s heartening to see such a timeless piece being adapted yet again.
The Phantom of the Opera, he’s there… on Disney+. Deadline has revealed that the streamer is looking to make a reimagined Phantom of the Opera movie with a YA twist. This piece of IP has, of course, seen numerous adaptations over the years and it’s no surprise another one is in the works. But the idea that this film would be a “YA movie re-imagination” of The Phantom of the Opera has its fans raising their eyebrows for several reasons.
Initially, “The Phantom of the Opera” seems to resonate strongly with young adult (YA) audiences in numerous aspects. Since I was within the YA age bracket when I initially encountered this tale, I’m not alone in my observation that others online share similar views. Thus, one might wonder what a “YA” version of “The Phantom of the Opera” would entail. For instance, imagine an alternate reality set in high school, where Christine is a timid choir girl and the Phantom is the mysterious kid lurking beneath the bleachers.
To put it another way, while “The Phantom of the Opera” may resonate with younger audiences, it delves deeply into mature subjects. Beneath its gothic charm, the story reveals complex relationships, sexual maturation, and dark themes like murder, abuse, and fixation. Although these topics are intriguing to delve into, they seem less in line with the typical Disney young adult content. However, who knows what might appeal to the diverse tastes of viewers?
It’s clear that we have limited information about Disney+’s adaptation of YA “The Phantom of the Opera”. Beyond its target audience, our knowledge is restricted to the fact that Kenny Ortega, who has been involved with Disney’s “High School Musical” and “Descendants” series, will be in charge. While fans of these productions are excited, I can’t help but imagine a scene where Christine Daae is vying for a role in the school musical, which seems somewhat out of place considering the original storyline. At this point, I’m still trying to decide whether to embrace or question this casting choice.
Lovers of “The Phantom of the Opera” are undoubtedly curious about whether the show’s famous tunes will be part of the Disney film adaptation. However, as of yet, there’s been no announcement regarding this matter.
