‘Strange New Worlds’ Ending Sparks Hints of a Star Trek: TOS Reboot

Recently, it was announced by Paramount+ that the television series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is planned to conclude after five seasons, an unexpected decision being made prior to the show’s third season, which premiered in July.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I found myself puzzled when news about the ending of Strange New Worlds surfaced prematurely. However, during his talk at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, showrunner Akiva Goldsman added an intriguing twist to the story. According to TrekMovie’s report, Goldsman hinted that while we might be saying goodbye to Strange New Worlds, it could potentially pave the way for a fresh take or resurrection of the classic Star Trek series, fondly known as The Original Series (TOS).

Goldsman explained, “Currently, these characters are being shaped and developed. We wanted to explore their origins and the fates of some of them. These were questions that needed answering, and we made a commitment to do so. That’s our five-year plan. But then, we encounter TOS. [Adopting a more secretive tone] However, they won’t be dying, and we have those sets…” This statement certainly sparks curiosity among fans.

2023 will see the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, yet no new film is scheduled to commemorate this occasion. While a new Starfleet Academy series is set for release in 2026, it may not be the grand spectacle one might expect for such a momentous milestone. A reboot or revival of the original series, the one that sparked it all, could certainly generate excitement.

In simpler terms, Strange New Worlds has already brought back several characters from the original Star Trek series such as Spock, Kirk, Uhura, Scotty, Chapel, and M’Benga. To fully recreate the classic team, they plan to include characters like Bones and Sulu who made their appearance later in the original series.

Stoking the rumors further is William Shatner, known for his role as Captain Kirk, who has indicated that Paramount has reached out to him about a Star Trek project. Although Captain Kirk was believed to have perished in Star Trek: Generations, the third season of Picard subtly suggested the prospect of his resurrection.

Imagine this scenario: Could it be that Captain Kirk, now aged, is reprised by Shatner, reminiscing about his youthful escapades. The young cast from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would then enact those very adventures as they unfolded back in time. This potential development would undoubtedly excite fans and add a fresh twist to the beloved franchise.

In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the initial mission spanned a period of five years, however, only three seasons worth of episodes were produced. It’s possible that a new series or prequel could delve into those unexplored years, leveraging the existing sets and characters to some extent, as suggested by Goldsman.

It’s still unclear for now, but indications are leaning towards something intriguing in the future. Many enthusiasts would delight in additional seasons of Strange New Worlds, however, in today’s streaming era, five seasons is typically the limit. Streaming platforms tend to favor debuting fresh shows rather than prolonging existing ones as new content tends to draw more subscribers.

If reimagining the classic Star Trek series might attract more subscribers to Paramount+ compared to a new season of Strange New Worlds, it wouldn’t be surprising if they opt for this approach instead. Regardless of the decision, Star Trek enthusiasts have much to anticipate!
