Steve Carell is famous for his comedic talent, but he considers being a father his most important role. In a recent interview with L’Officiel, the 63-year-old actor shared how his relationship with his children, Annie and John, impacted his work on the new HBO series, Rooster.
He often drew on his real-life connection with his daughter while playing his character, influencing the emotional journey of the role. He even helped his daughter launch her career by getting her a job as a production assistant on the set.
This led to a touching moment during filming when Carell accidentally used his daughter’s real name while reciting lines. “I got her a job as a production assistant, and while shooting one scene, I accidentally said, ‘I would do anything for Annie,’ instead of my character’s daughter’s name,” he explained.
The small error actually connected with everyone on set and perfectly expressed the emotion he was aiming for. He remembered a sweet, heartwarming reaction, explaining, “It felt right because I was thinking about my daughter when I delivered the line.”
Steve Carell, who has two children with his wife, Nancy Walls, says being a parent brings him more happiness than anything he’s achieved in his career. He explained, “Being a dad is the best part of my life – nothing else even comes close. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”
Despite being very famous, the comedian has always intentionally kept his work and personal life separate. He sees his career as a job, not his whole identity, and wants to ensure his children grow up normally. As he explained, ‘It’s always just been a job. I’ve tried not to let it define me too much. But mostly, I just didn’t want it to be weird for my kids.’ He’s largely succeeded in keeping his children out of the public eye, only occasionally bringing them to events like movie premieres. A recent public appearance was at the 2022 premiere of Minions: The Rise of Gru, a film where he voices the main character. He noted at the time, ‘They’re here today. These movies started when they were 4 and 7, and now they’re 18 and 21.’
He shared that his children, even as adults, still feel a strong connection to the franchise thanks to their family’s history with it. He described how enthusiastically they responded when he asked if they wanted to attend the premiere, saying they were immediately on board. He believes it’s become a nostalgic experience for them, as they’ve grown to love the characters and the series, which has been a significant part of their family life.
Beyond his work on Rooster, Steve Carell has stayed very busy in the entertainment industry. He’s currently executive producing a new animated series for Netflix, which is expected to be announced soon. Carell continues to demonstrate his versatility as an actor, moving between dramatic and comedic roles.
