Nicole Kidman (58) Reveals the Unexpected Skill She Learned for Her Latest Role

Nicole Kidman is famous for fully committing to her characters, often to the point where it’s hard to separate her from the role. She’s known for going to great lengths, whether it’s enduring intense emotional stress for a thriller or deeply researching a character like a detective, as she did for the film Destroyer.

For her latest project, Kidman took her preparation even further, learning a surprisingly detailed and difficult skill. She revealed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on March 2nd that she’s become proficient in forensic science.

“I can do an autopsy,” she told Fallon, explaining how she prepared to play Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the clinical and knowledgeable medical examiner she portrays in the new series Scarpetta.

The actress revealed she fully immersed herself in the role by spending considerable time with a medical examiner. She learned how to perform autopsies and gained a detailed understanding of human anatomy. During an interview, she confidently stated she could identify and remove all the organs, even joking she was ready to demonstrate on a model. She detailed her knowledge, listing organs like the lungs, liver, gallbladder, and intestines. This dedication to her craft is typical of her work, as she considers herself a character actor, prioritizing transformative roles over typical stardom.

The actress has talked before about how deeply she immerses herself in her roles, and how that can impact her personal life. She specifically recalled a difficult time while filming the movie Destroyer, where she played a tough police officer for five months. Her then-partner really didn’t like how much she stayed in character, even after filming wrapped. She remembered him saying he couldn’t wait for the project to be over, as she remained committed to the character the entire time.

Today, March 11th, marks the premiere of her new series, Scarpetta, a large-scale production for Prime Video.

The show is based on the popular novels by Patricia Cornwell and boasts a strong cast. Jamie Lee Curtis plays the role of the doctor’s sister, Dorothy, while Bobby Cannavale stars as Detective Pete Marino and Ariana DeBose plays the tech expert, Lucy.

Following the debut of her new mystery series, the actress has a packed year ahead. In May, she’ll be co-hosting the Met Gala with Beyoncé and Venus Williams, putting her in the spotlight of the fashion industry. She’s also working on a follow-up to her popular film, Practical Magic, alongside Sandra Bullock, and will soon appear in a new series called Margo’s Got Money Troubles.

Nicole Kidman recently finalized her divorce from Keith Urban, but she’s remained dedicated to her career and her daughters, Sunday and Faith. She continues to be a very busy and successful actress, and upcoming projects like the thriller Discretion promise plenty of new content for her fans soon.
