One gathers that Ford Motor Company (F +0.37%) is attempting a pivot regarding these electric vehicles. A rather predictable development, really, given the sluggish uptake and the previous administration’s regrettable enthusiasm for dismantling perfectly serviceable incentives. Though, let’s not be dramatic. It’s not as though the entire automotive industry is on the verge of collapse.
The narrative, as it were, is not entirely accurate. While some of the more fanciful electric projects have been, shall we say, shelved – indefinitely postponed is the polite phrasing – Ford is pressing ahead with a five-billion-dollar undertaking. This involves a new architecture, dubbed the “Universal EV Platform,” intended to produce affordable electric vehicles. A touch ambitious, perhaps, but one must admire the audacity.
Given the prevailing headwinds – the American public, it seems, remains stubbornly attached to internal combustion – one might deem it a risky venture. But then, life is rarely sensible, is it?
A Radical Shift, or Merely a Facelift?
The Universal EV Platform is the result of a considerable amount of effort, and a rather clever bit of engineering, if one is to believe the press releases. It’s a nod to Ford’s history, you see. The original Model T was, if memory serves, branded the “Universal Car.” Just as that venerable vehicle spawned a multitude of variations, so too will this platform underpin a variety of models. A clever bit of marketing, wouldn’t you say?
Ford hasn’t divulged all the details, naturally. One wouldn’t expect them to. But we understand the platform is designed for simplified production, which, logically, translates to lower costs. Efficiency is also a key component, allowing for smaller, lighter, and therefore less expensive battery packs without sacrificing range. Perfectly sensible, really.
As CEO Jim Farley rather grandly proclaimed, it’s the most radical change to Ford’s design and build process since the Model T. A bold statement, certainly. One hopes it’s not merely hyperbole.
Ford is aiming for a range exceeding 300 miles for vehicles based on this platform. Ambitious, but not entirely unrealistic.
What Ford Intends to Build
First up is an electric pickup truck, due next year, with an expected price of around thirty thousand dollars. Not an F-150, mind you. Ford describes it as a “midsize four-door.” Apparently, it boasts a roomy interior – thanks to the battery pack’s shape – and superefficient aerodynamics. One pictures a rather sensible vehicle, if not particularly glamorous.
This will be followed by two- and three-row crossover SUVs and two electric sedans, all by the end of the decade. What follows, of course, depends on the vagaries of regulation and the whims of future administrations. A rather precarious situation, wouldn’t you agree?
Bolstering the Business, or Simply a Gamble?
Farley suggests this platform provides a “scalable hedge against a potential regulation snapback.” A rather diplomatic way of saying they’re preparing for the inevitable political shifts. One suspects they’re also keeping a wary eye on the competition, particularly the increasingly assertive Chinese manufacturers like BYD (BYDDY 1.84%).
Regardless of the political climate in the United States, competing in the global market requires a degree of adaptability. And, let’s be honest, a healthy dose of optimism.
Even without the recent fluctuations in gasoline prices, Ford’s five-billion-dollar wager appears, on balance, rather shrewd. Though, one should always approach such ventures with a touch of cynicism. It keeps things interesting, you see.
