As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been amazed by Meryl Streep. Her career really took off in the late 70s, and she instantly proved she was a force to be reckoned with. I remember seeing her early work in films like ‘Julia’ with Jane Fonda – it was clear she was destined for great things. Then came ‘The Deer Hunter,’ a powerful Vietnam War film that earned her the first of what would become many Oscar nominations. And who could forget her in Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’? It was just the beginning of an incredible run.
Just two years into her career, Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her performance in the critically acclaimed film Kramer vs. Kramer. The movie powerfully depicted a difficult divorce and custody battle, and both Streep and Dustin Hoffman received awards for their roles.
Despite their on-screen success, Streep and Hoffman reportedly had a strained and often unpleasant working relationship. Accounts suggest the tension started when Streep asked for script changes to better represent her character’s point of view and make it feel more relevant.
Hoffman apparently disagreed with these changes, having already prepared his own interpretation of the scene. Frustrated, he reportedly told Streep, “Meryl, why don’t you stop championing feminism and just act the scene?”
Dustin Hoffman, famous for his dedicated and immersive acting style, sometimes used his process as an excuse for inappropriate behavior on set. He once unexpectedly slapped a co-star during filming. She later told The New York Times that it happened on her very first take, of her very first movie, and was a clear overstep. She said, “He just slapped me. And you see it in the film.”
During filming, Hoffman allegedly continued to upset his co-star, reportedly even shouting the name of her late fiancé, John Cazale, during scenes to try and provoke a reaction. She later shared that her negative experience with him started at their first meeting, telling Time magazine he approached her, introduced himself as “Dustin—burp—Hoffman,” and immediately put his hand on her breast. She vividly recalled thinking, “What an obnoxious pig.”
Meryl Streep is widely considered one of the greatest actors in film history, holding the record for the most Academy Award nominations. For over five decades, she’s consistently delivered outstanding performances by taking on varied and demanding roles.
Streep is celebrated for her incredible skill, especially her ability to convincingly portray different accents and fully become her characters. Currently, she’s preparing for the sequel to a beloved film: The Devil Wears Prada 2, set to release on May 1st.
She’ll be returning as the iconic Miranda Priestly, alongside Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, making it one of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year.
