Live-Action SAMURAI CHAMPLOO Series in the Works from ONE PIECE Studio

According to Variety, this announcement comes right before the second season of One Piece premieres on Netflix. Fans who are familiar with the original Japanese series have praised the show for adapting it for Western audiences while still staying true to its spirit. Given their success with One Piece, Tomorrow Studios is likely well-positioned to handle an adaptation of Samurai Champloo.

Becky Clements, a co-founder of Tomorrow Studios and producer of One Piece, shared with Variety that they discussed a potential Samurai Champloo project with [Watanabe] during a dinner in Japan. She said they were very excited he agreed to be creatively involved if the project moved forward.

The 2004 anime series Samurai Champloo offered a unique take on Edo-era Japan, blending historical settings with modern elements. The story centers on Fuu, a young waitress, who enlists the help of two very different samurai – the reserved Jin and the carefree Mugen – to track down a mysterious sunflower-scented samurai and get her revenge. Their journey across the country is filled with constant trouble and exciting adventures, all set to a contemporary soundtrack.

If I were creating manga or anime, Tomorrow Studios would be my only choice to bring it to life in live-action. Although the Champloo project is just beginning, it’s likely to be a faithful and well-made adaptation.
