The Action Movie Robert Downey Jr. Says Is the Absolute Worst of All Time

Robert Downey Jr. was key to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with his role in 2008. His performance as the witty and confident Tony Stark helped turn the franchise into a worldwide sensation.

As the central figure in the popular Avengers team, he starred with actors like Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson. Many fans consider his character to be the heart of the entire superhero series.

The actor has worked in Hollywood for decades, starting as a child star in the 1970s. Before becoming known for action roles, he worked with famous directors like John Hughes, Oliver Stone, Richard Attenborough, and Robert Altman.

Early in his career, he played a variety of characters, and it took time for him to focus on action films. He’s often spoken openly about not liking some of his past work, especially the 1998 thriller U.S. Marshals.

Although he worked with Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes on that film, he found the experience very disappointing, later calling it “possibly the worst action movie of all time.”

In his book, The Fall and Rise of the Comeback Kid, the actor described how deeply a certain role affected him. He joked that after a very difficult year, being asked to play Johnny Handgun for twelve weeks felt like a terrible idea – “like it would kill you.” He also shared that he was searching for work that felt more fulfilling, hoping to be in a movie he could enjoy with his child, but realized that pursuit might actually be disheartening.

Although Robert Downey Jr.’s role as U.S. Marshal was financially successful, earning $102 million on a $45 million budget, it’s overshadowed by his huge impact through his work with Marvel. Recently, Downey Jr. has returned to that world, but in an unexpected way. He’s slated to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.

The new film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, will be released on December 18th. The actor is also confirmed to appear in the next Avengers movie, Secret Wars, planned for December 2027. Beyond these big projects, he’s staying active in the industry and will be a presenter at the 98th Academy Awards this March.
