I’ve noticed a really positive change on set lately with the addition of intimacy coordinators. They’re amazing – they basically make sure everyone feels safe and respected when filming scenes that involve physical closeness. It’s so important to me that actors know exactly what’s happening and that their boundaries are honored. They work with the director to achieve the creative vision for the scene, but always with a focus on consent and making sure everyone feels comfortable. It’s a huge relief to see this level of care and professionalism being prioritized.
Brooke M. Haney, an intimacy coordinator who has worked on shows like Elsbeth, Mayor of Kingstown, and Harlem, recently discussed what it’s really like to film intimate scenes.
Contrary to what many people think, Haney says these sets are actually very technical and professional, which often reduces any potential discomfort. “The truth is, it’s not usually very sensual,” Haney told US Weekly. “With bright lights, microphones, cameras, the director, the cinematographer, and crew all watching on monitors, it just doesn’t feel intimate.”
Even though film sets are clinical environments, Haney admits that actors’ bodies can sometimes react physically without them being able to control it. When this happens, the priority is to maintain a professional atmosphere and continue filming. “Sometimes our bodies just have natural reactions that we can’t control,” Haney explained.
To help actors recover from intense scenes, Haney uses simple methods to shift their focus and blood flow. “If an actor is really caught up in the emotion,” they explain, “I’ll have them do some quick exercises like push-ups or jumping jacks.” This helps move blood away from the emotional center and allows them to regain composure. This is just one example of the many techniques coordinators use to create a safe and comfortable environment, allowing actors to separate themselves from the characters they play.
I’m a big fan of Mayor of Kingstown, and Jeremy Renner is definitely the face of the show. It was amazing to see him return to acting after his accident in 2023, and he’s been really involved in making the fourth season. He’s also been busy with other projects, like the new movie Wake Up Dead Man.
Another show I’ve been enjoying is Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston – it’s so clever! It’s great to see how well everything is coordinated, and it really shows in the quality of the show. Mayor of Kingstown and Elsbeth are both building really interesting stories, and it’s reassuring to know that intimacy coordination is always a priority on set, making sure everything is done safely and professionally. The writing and the actors are just fantastic, and it’s why I keep coming back for more.
