As a dedicated follower and admirer of Halsey‘s journey, I find her transformation from Ashley to Halsey, and now her exploration into acting, truly captivating. It’s like watching a chameleon adapt to its environment, each metamorphosis more intriguing than the last.
More recently, Halsey (whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane and uses both she/her and they/them pronouns) has shared that transitioning to Hollywood and filmmaking has allowed them to step away from their singer identity. In their music career, Halsey has found it empowering to fully embrace her stage name. Notably, this shift also allows for a pause in being Halsey, particularly with upcoming movies like Americana (2023) and Maxxxine (2024).
Here’s one way of paraphrasing the original passage: Frangipane likened their struggle with maintaining their stage identity as an actor dealing with monotony from playing the same role for too long in a daytime soap opera. They admitted that, over time, they had grown distant from their Halsey character, and eventually found that their stage name became synonymous with more than just a label – it represented a persona.
“The Lilith singer often finds similarities between Halsey and Grey’s Anatomy, a show that everyone who has been on it likely adored, but after 25 seasons, they might feel like they can no longer portray Meredith.”
“Initially, Halsey was just her stage name, not a personal representation. But as time went on, it seemed like it had taken on a life of its own and became more than just a character. This realization led to a deeper question: ‘Why do I feel like I’m embodying Halsey instead of myself?'”
In these projects, Halsey’s name stays as it is, yet through her performances, she explored a range of characters distinct from herself. Acting provided a relief for her, as she wasn’t required to oversee and manage the entire creative process like she does when making music. Instead, she was merely a part of someone else’s artistic vision, with the director and production team handling the more creative responsibilities.
Apart from acting, the 29-year-old singer found joy in exploring unique methods for creating art on her own. She confided that being a solo artist can sometimes be isolating, something many might not fully grasp. In her words, “It’s refreshing to learn something new, connect with others, and collaborate. Being a solo artist can feel quite solitary. I don’t think people truly understand how isolating it can be.”
Halsey’s fifth studio album The Great Impersonator arrives on October 25.
