As a dedicated fan who has journeyed through the pages of Middle-Earth time and again, I must say that the opening episodes of ‘The Rings of Power’ season 2 have been nothing short of captivating. The way the writers have interwoven the narratives of Arondir and Isildur, two characters who find themselves on the fringes of society, is nothing short of masterful storytelling.
Last week marked the beginning of ‘The Rings of Power’ season 2, unfurling its first three episodes. These opening episodes have effectively established the main themes for the upcoming episodes. We’ve been introduced to a variety of events, including Sauron’s influence corrupting Celebrimbor, the corruption of Dwarves, insights into Orcs in Middle-Earth, and Galadriel’s transition from a reckless warrior towards a more contemplative character.
Currently, we’ve gained a better understanding of the activities that both Arondir and Isildur have engaged in following the heartrending cliffhanger at the end of season 1.
It’s tragic to report that Bronwyn, whom Arondir deeply loved, passed away due to an infection caused by being struck by Orcish arrows. As for Isildur, it appears he may have met a similar fate as the Numenoreans hastily retreated to their island nation, leaving his status uncertain.
Over the course of an episode, Isildur and Arondir meet up, with Arondir providing aid to Isildur and Estrid when they’re attacked by loyalists of Sauron. Through their shared hardships, albeit distinct in nature, Arondir and Isildur gradually form a bond.
Arondir has tragically lost the woman he deeply cared for, and Theo appears to be pushing him away even more, as Arondir is now carrying the burden of causing his mother’s demise. With no real connections tying him to the community, Arondir remains there only because he desires to assist them.
It appears Isildur is left alone, with no means of reaching his family who are deeply mourning him. As time goes by, they might grow closer due to their mutual sorrow. Moreover, being outsiders in a suspicious environment where trust is scarce, they may find common ground in their desire to aid each other and combat evil forces.
Regarding Arondir, his story’s conclusion remains uncertain because he’s an original character. On the other hand, we know Isildur’s tale ends in a specific way. Given that Pharazon has been chosen as Numenor’s next king following Isildur’s departure, the show seems to be preparing us for Numenor’s destruction. This is because Pharazon, who may eventually succumb to Sauron’s influence, will possibly try to violate “The Ban of Valar,” leading to Numenor’s downfall.
Given their unwavering loyalty to the Valar and the Elves, it’s likely that Eärien and Elendil will find a way to evade the impending doom and eventually link up with Isildur in the future.
