Billie Piper, best known as the Doctor’s first modern companion, has appeared in the series multiple times, but her return has sparked speculation. Many fans now believe the 2026 Christmas special will continue the story from the 2008 episode, “Journey’s End.”
Okay, let me quickly recap for anyone who needs it before we dive into this fan theory. This episode felt like the Doctor Who version of Avengers: Endgame – seriously, everyone the Tenth Doctor knew showed up to take down Davros and the Daleks. And at the very end, Rose Tyler finally made it back to her parallel Earth, the one she’d been separated from for so long.
This time, Rose is with a version of the Doctor who looks and remembers the Tenth Doctor, offering her a chance at love and a happy life. Because this Doctor only has one heart, they can grow old and face the future – and mortality – together. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Rose has been officially listed as missing… until now.
The official Doctor Who website features a blog run by UNIT, a fictional organization from the show. A recent post from Shirley-Anne Bingham, UNIT’s science advisor, looks back at Rose Tyler’s return to Earth. It’s been 20 years since the events of ‘Operation Mannequin’ in 2006, which occurred in the first season of the show’s revival. In that episode, Rose traveled with the Ninth Doctor in the TARDIS after they stopped killer mannequins. She believed she’d only been gone for 12 hours, but in reality, it had been a full 12 months.
However, the final part of the message is what’s leading fans to believe the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special will continue the story from “Journey’s End.” Here’s what it says:
Just a heads-up: Rose Tyler is missing and causing some unusual activity in space-time, so please be vigilant. I’ve tasked the Vlinx with monitoring all media and the subwave network for any sign of her.
It seems the Doctor’s latest incarnation, who resembles Rose Tyler, might be getting into trouble. We could also finally learn what happened to Rose, almost twenty years after she ended up on a different Earth with the Doctor from the ‘Metacrisis’ storyline. Interestingly, the current Fourteenth Doctor is also living on Earth and bears a striking resemblance to the Tenth Doctor.
Is this a weird kind of get-together? Possibly. The show has definitely been playing on our memories recently, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the Christmas special.
