Agatha All Along Producer Calls Wanda Vision A ‘Puzzle Box’; Compares The Spin-Off Series With Original

As an ardent fan with a heart that beats for Marvel, I am absolutely thrilled about the imminent release of Agatha All Along! The prospect of delving deeper into the intriguing world of WandaVision, through the lens of the enigmatic Agatha Harkness, is nothing short of exhilarating.

In a matter of just a few weeks, Agatha All Along – a new series spin-off from the popular Disney+ show WandaVision – will be available for viewing. Recently, during promotional activities, the show’s producer Mary Livanos discussed the connections between the original and the spin-off on the Official Marvel Podcast.

According to Livanos, one remarkable aspect of WandaVision was its intricate “mystery box” plot structure, which required several episodes to decipher and ultimately reveal the truth behind the series’ events. Similarly, it seems that the spin-off was conceived with a similar goal in mind.

“He mentioned that it was great the consequences didn’t involve the end of the world or the universe, but rather had significance for the characters and those close to them. In creating Agatha, our aim has been to maintain that sense of importance and relevance.”

In a new series, Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness – a formidable witch from Salem – who was confined within Wanda’s artificial reality following the occurrences of WandaVision, will now be seen living out her days as a troublesome neighbor. The upcoming spin-off will continue the storyline and restore Agatha to her former powerful status.

When a gothic teenager implores her to guide him along the infamous Witch’s Path, Agatha’s curiosity is sparked, leading her to join this unexpected journey. The summary reveals that “Agatha Harkness, under a magical compulsion, gains liberty due to a teen’s assistance. Intrigued by his request, she sets out on the trials of the Witches’ Road to reobtain her powers and uncover the teen’s intentions.”

Despite serving as a protagonist, Hahn deliberately gives the witch character a touch of bitterness and sharp unpleasantness, much like in the original series. The actress expressed her gratitude to the creators for sharing this vision, stating that she was eager to explore what lay beneath the tough, harsh exterior. She further mentioned, “I wanted to see what lies beneath that strange, hard, unkind facade.”

In the series WandaVision, her character showcased a vibrant and distinctive persona, as Kathryn Hahn described her as “an exceptional old-school actor who enjoys adding flair.” To maintain this aspect of Agatha’s personality in the spin-off, the actress aimed to remain authentic.

In the role opposite Hahn, Joe Locke from Heartstopper plays a secretive teen boy who saves Agatha. His portrayal as an openly gay character has sparked criticism. When asked about it in an interview with Variety, he replied, “I’ve never given it much thought. It can become overwhelming if you dwell on it too long.” Nevertheless, the actor confessed that working on a Marvel project was a truly exciting experience for him.

Agatha All Along will be available to stream on Disney+ from September 18 onwards.
