Specifically, Damon’s mom had reservations about Tinseltown. She attempted to deter her son by painting the business as populated with arrogant and self-centered individuals. However, Damon was determined in his aspirations.

In an attempt to comfort Matt Damon’s mom, Ben Affleck, a dear friend and co-actor, tried to ease her concerns. However, many years down the line, he confessed that his attempts at reassurance weren’t entirely truthful.

Affleck told Interview Magazine that he once defended Hollywood to Matt’s mom, but now he acknowledges that his defense was untrue. [laughs]

In 1997, Damon shared with Interview Magazine that he had decided to become an actor as early as age 12. Prior to this, he dreamed of being a basketball player, idolizing Tiny Archibald. However, his father, understanding the physical constraints of their family, encouraged him to reconsider his aspirations.

He shared that his father had a conversation with him, stating that he was the tallest Damon ever to exist, standing at five feet eleven inches. However, his father made it clear that he wouldn’t play in the NBA. At that point, Damon decided to quit basketball and pursue acting instead.

In his reminiscence, Damon recounted a discussion with his mother during his teenage years. He shared that he talked to her when he was around 16 or 17, and she inquired about his intense passion for acting. He explained that his drive stemmed from the dream of one day strolling down the street and having people recognize him as Matt Damon, the greatest ever. However, his mother dismissed it as a self-centered fantasy and questioned how it would benefit others.

Even though Affleck’s father was part of the Boston theater community, both of his parents initially showed reservations about his career choice due to the general understanding that acting can be a challenging profession.

He said he didn’t think they were pleased with the prospect of their children facing a lifetime of rejection, scraping by for a sandwich and hoping for free refills at the age of 45. But Matt and he were very clear about their desire to be actors.
