As a dedicated cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I can confidently say that Tom Hanks’ directorial debut, “That Thing You Do,” is a timeless masterpiece that deserves a spot on every film lover’s watchlist. Having grown up during the era of Beetle music, this movie resonated deeply with me, capturing the spirit and energy of the times perfectly.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Tom Hanks’ directorial debut, “That Thing You Do,” is set to premiere on Prime Video. Back in 1996, our beloved Forrest Gump actor stepped behind the director’s chair for the first time and brought this heartwarming film to life. Over the years, it captured the hearts of audiences and garnered critical acclaim as it graced theater screens.
The movie scored high on Rotten Tomatoes and was a hit in theaters. It was written by a famous Hollywood star when the Beatles were popular, impacting the pop culture.
Apart from Hanks, the movie featured a star-studded cast that included Tom Everest Scott, Steve Zahn, Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, and several others, with Hanks portraying Mr. White alongside them.
Regarding the storyline of the movie, it’s summarized as such: “During the 1960s, a pop rock band brings on board Guy, who is passionate about jazz music. His unique rhythms significantly contribute to their rise to fame. However, they are among numerous bands aiming to imitate The Beatles.”
Besides the main actors, the film That Thing You Do features several notable cameos, including Chris Isaak, Peter Scolari, Kevin Pollak, Jonathan Demme, and Bryan Cranston. Additionally, Tom Hanks also included his son, Colin Hanks, and his wife, Rita Wilson, for small roles in the movie.
2021 marked the 25th anniversary since “That Thing You Do” hit the screens, and looking back, the original cast reminisced about their roles in a movie that represented the coming-of-age genre during its era.
Regarding the creation process of the movie, the actress who starred in You’ve Got Mail shared with a media outlet that she had always been captivated by the rock group Jan and Dean during her high school years. The idea of a band that manages to complete their initial tour and later disbands – she found it incredibly authentic.
In response to Hanks’ remarks, Wilson, his wife, mentioned, “It all began with a band that had a one-hit wonder. Then the world shifted to another one-hit wonder. That was the initial spark of the concept.” She further explained, “His writing method is he writes, and only after completing the script does he share it with you.”
In the meantime, Embry, who played T.B. Player in the movie, discussed how he landed a part in Tom Hanks’ film. He explained, “I had recently wrapped up Empire Records, and an audition popped up. I was playing bass at that time. I was quite punk rock in the ’90s, with plenty of nail polish.”
He added, “I often wore women’s clothing. For the audition, I believe I donned male attire, but my bass was completely covered in mess. One detail that stands out—near the input jack, I had removed a pornographic image and sealed it with lacquer. When you connected it, well…”
The date for the film to be dropped on Prime Video will be shared soon.
