As a gamer with over two decades of immersion in Middle-earth, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as I read about the upcoming season of “The Rings of Power.” The anticipation has been building ever since the first season left us hanging, and the addition of Tom Bombadil, one of Tolkien’s most intriguing characters, only adds fuel to the fire.
In spite of facing much criticism and backlash, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” turned into a successful series on Amazon, as we’ve mentioned in various narratives before. As expected, it was renewed for a second season which premiered on August 29, 2024, and has been acclaimed by both fans and critics as an improvement. The anticipation surrounding the show’s progression is high, particularly following recent major announcements made by the showrunners.
In terms of the new personalities that are coming up, Tom Bombadil is among those expected to leave a mark in Season 2. This enigmatic character from Tolkien’s works will be brought to life by the accomplished Rory Kinnear, whose thoughts on the role have been shared with us earlier.
However, in a fresh conversation with The Wrap, the co-showrunners Patrick McKay and Lindsey Weber have additionally shared insights on the character and its influence. In this article, we’ll delve into their views regarding Bombadil.
In a comprehensive chat with The Wrap, McKay and Weber shared insights on the upcoming season of The Rings of Power. They hinted that the second installment will be distinctly unique, as suggested by their remarks about Tom Bombadil and Rory Kinnear’s roles. Here, we delve into what they had to share regarding these characters’ influence in the upcoming season.
In the midst of handling several beloved characters during their early stages, the news about Tom Bombadil being introduced this season generated a great deal of enthusiasm among fans. Many viewers felt his absence in the “Fellowship of the Ring” adaptation, so was there any extra pressure when it came to portraying him in live action for Season 2?
I: Instead of using the word “pressure,” let’s consider it an opportunity. Tom Bombadil is a mysterious, playful, and everlasting being who makes an appearance in our narrative. The thought of our characters accidentally encountering him, ideally in the most charmingly unforeseen manner, has always been intriguing to us.
If you’re wondering who might top your list if you were to consider characters from “The Lord of the Rings” and Middle-earth during the Second Age, Tom would undoubtedly be one of them. We simply couldn’t overlook him.
P.M.: I like to say that he’s sort of the most “Lord of the Rings” thing in “Lord of the Rings.”
Rory Kinnear landed the role as Tom. Can you tell me which qualities or criteria were important during the casting process for him?
L.W.: That’s a good one because you can’t reduce Tom to boxes. There has to be that twinkle and that mystery. He’s the most enigmatic, the most wise, the most unusual. He’s singular. All the boxes have to be ticked and how many people can do that?
As a gamer, I’ve got to give a shout-out to our fantastic casting director Theo Park. I shared my vision for this character and how they would fit into the story, and she came back with “Rory Kinnear.” In a serendipitous twist, he was directing an opera in Cornwall at the time, but still managed to make time for us. Turns out, Tom Bombadil is his wife’s favorite character, and working with him has been nothing short of delightful. He’s got a great sense of humor, yet he can deliver some truly dramatic performances. Plus, he sings – and not just any songs, but ones that perfectly embody the character we had in mind. In essence, Rory Kinnear is exactly what we hoped for!
