Despite his fame and wealth, the ‘Red Rocker’ seems to strive for a normal life, just like everyone else – finding joy in everyday moments, even amidst the usual struggles. And that’s perfectly understandable, considering all his hard work to achieve success.
During a recent interview with Louder, Sammy Hagar shared his thoughts on various subjects, including his belief that Alex Van Halen has a very negative personality similar to Roger Waters. He doesn’t think he’ll ever collaborate with Van Halen again, but he’s confident he’ll continue to be successful regardless.

Looking back on times when he seemed overly confident, he acknowledged he now feels regretful – something that often happens with maturity. He realized he may have once overestimated his own significance. It’s actually quite nice to hear Sammy Hagar admit he used to think too highly of himself.
Growing up, I used to listen to other kids brag and show off, and I thought it was ridiculous. But once I found success, I started doing the same thing. I became boastful, constantly trying to prove I was the best at everything – faster, stronger, a better singer, a better musician. Looking back, I realize how silly it was. It all came from feeling insecure. If I could talk to that version of myself now, I’d tell him to calm down and that his behavior was pushing people away. He needed to realize that people would like him just as he was.
People change over time, and your opinion of someone like Hagar might be different now than it was twenty years ago. Thankfully, he’s become more humble. He used to be overly confident, but now he realizes that doesn’t really matter. What’s truly important is being genuine and connecting with others.
Hagar explained he’s opposed to a movie adaptation of his 2011 autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, because he doesn’t want anyone profiting from inaccurate or exaggerated portrayals of his past relationships. He wants to ensure the real story is the one that’s told.
Hagar famously said he wasn’t suffering or unhappy, but actually felt like “the happiest guy on the planet.”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion about Sammy Hagar’s music, whether it’s from his solo work or with bands like Van Halen. But beyond his music, he simply wants people to like him as a person – and that makes him relatable, just like the rest of us, which is a positive thing.
