As a die-hard Marvel fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and binge-watching movies, I must say that Deadpool 3 is a cinematic treasure trove for Easter eggs and references. The creators have truly outdone themselves with this film, managing to blend humor, action, and a deep appreciation for the source material in ways that only a dedicated fan could appreciate.
In the creation of Deadpool and Wolverine, the masterminds didn’t skimp on including numerous Easter eggs and Marvel Universe references. With the film now over a month past its release and breaking records as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, here’s a list, starting from guest appearances to comic book allusions in this cinematic universe, ranking the top Easter eggs found within it.
Stan Lee’s Cameo
Cheers to Stan Lee! This cherished comic book author was famous for making cameos in Marvel movies, and although he sadly passed away in 2018, this tradition has been beautifully maintained in the Shawn Levy threequel. If you keep an eye out during the third act of the film when the two heroes battle against the Deadpool horde on a bus, there is an advertisement displayed on the vehicle for a company called Stan Lee Steamers, showcasing the franchise’s logo with his signature glasses.
Chris Evans as Human Torch
Despite concluding his tenure as iconic Captain America, Chris Evans is back in the Marvel universe, not portraying that character again, but instead as the Human Torch. This marks a reprisal of his role from the Fantastic Four movie franchise.
20th Century Fox Logo in the Void
This nod to the old film studio that no longer exists is a heartfelt homage to the beginnings of the X-Men and Fantastic Four series. You might remember that in 2019, Disney bought 20th Century Fox, which means that the rights to create films for iconic characters such as X-Men, Avatar, and Die Hard now belong to Disney.
Gossip Girl
1. Ryan Reynolds continues to shower love on his wife Blake Lively, even while wearing the Deadpool costume. A video of him doing this has gone viral on social media. In it, he offers a risqué tribute to Lively and her series Gossip Girl. Breaking the usual rules, he then bursts into a performance of NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” astonishing the viewers.
Deadpool Corps
A whole squad of Deadpool versions, headed by none other than Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool, left fans in awe! This group consisted of the multiverse’s antihero and was quite a family gathering for Reynolds. Apart from Blake Lively providing the voiceover, Olin Reynolds, Lively, and youngest child took on the role of Baby Deadpool, while Inez Reynolds, their second child, stepped into the character of Kidpool.
Grabbing Shwarma
Near the end of the movie, as the two main characters save the entire multiverse, they decide to enjoy a shawarma afterwards – a moment reminiscent of the famous scene in Avengers where the group of heroes celebrated their victory over Loki by enjoying a similar meal.
Blade in his MCU debut
In a powerful entrance, Wesley Snipes makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Known for portraying this superhero character in a movie from way back in 1998, Snipes reappeared on-screen as the revitalized version of the iconic Blade character.
Henry Cavill as Wolverine
This move appears to acknowledge the speculations among fans about Henry Cavill potentially playing Wolverine following the renowned Hugh Jackman. Marvel seems to capitalize on these fan theories by interweaving them into their storylines.
Spiderman’s appearance
Although Spiderman didn’t physically appear in the movie, there’s a photo of him and Tony Stark displayed in Happy Hogan’s office, which reminds MCU fans of their shared past. This snapshot is reminiscent of the one shown in Avengers: Endgame when Stark recalls his connection with Peter Parker, the renowned Spiderman.
Marvel Comics references
The movie includes numerous references to Marvel comics, and the official Marvel Comics X (previously Twitter) page shared a video summarizing them all. In one instance, Logan is depicted wearing his traditional brown suit, a tribute to his comic book appearance in Incredible Hulk #340.
