Aragorn Actor in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Has Reportedly Been Found

Actor Leo Woodall, known for his work in British television, is rumored to be taking on the famous role of Aragorn (also called Strider) in Warner Bros.’ new Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum. Industry insiders and reports suggest he’s been cast, following his recent performances.

Rising actor Luke Woodall, known for his work in Netflix’s Vladimir with Rachel Weisz and last year’s Nuremberg, is set to take on the iconic role previously played by Viggo Mortensen in the beloved film trilogy. It’s a particularly fitting choice, as The Guardian points out that Woodall used to playfully act out the part of Aragorn as a child, making this casting feel like a dream come true.

Knight Edge Media reports that the studio started looking for a new actor for the role in late 2025 after Viggo Mortensen decided not to return. Director Andy Serkis held meetings with several young actors, using the code name “Milkey,” and prioritized finding someone with strong acting skills over a famous name. The studio didn’t consider actors like Henry Cavill or Ben Barnes, indicating they wanted someone new to the role.

Warner Bros. and New Line are creating new live-action Lord of the Rings movies, beginning with The Hunt for Gollum. Following a recent acquisition, filming is scheduled to start in Wellington, New Zealand, this May. Andy Serkis will direct, working with a screenplay team that includes Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Callum Gittins, and Panos Papageorgiou.

The first movie in the new Lord of the Rings series will center around the character of Gollum and is scheduled to come out on December 17, 2027. Although fans are hoping to see familiar faces, it’s currently unknown if the original actors – like Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood – will be back in their iconic roles. While Sir Ian McKellen has hinted he’d be willing to return as Gandalf, there hasn’t been any official announcement yet.

If the rumors are true, casting Woodall could be a new beginning for fans of Tolkien’s work and bring a new group of actors into the world of the franchise.
