It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a stock in possession of a compelling narrative, must be in need of a valuation. Palantir Technologies (PLTR +3.03%), having enjoyed a period of being rather favoured amongst the index-watchers of the Nasdaq-100, finds itself currently experiencing a slight… adjustment. A downturn of 14% in the year of our Lord 2026 is not, shall we say, the stuff of legends, but a recent lift of nearly 12% over the last five trading days suggests a glimmer of hope amidst what some are calling the “SaaSpocalypse.”1 Let us delve, then, into the currents swirling around this particular vessel, and see if we can chart a course through the fog.
Why Did Palantir’s Stock Find Itself Adrift in February?
In the early days of February, Palantir reported its fourth-quarter earnings. Revenue and profit, it must be said, were exhibiting a rather vigorous growth spurt. And yet, the stock has been…sideways. A curious phenomenon, isn’t it? Like a dwarf attempting to dance a jig. The primary culprit isn’t anything intrinsically wrong with Palantir itself, but rather the broader macroeconomic winds. Specifically, a rather unpleasant squall blew through the large-cap software-as-a-service sector after Anthropic’s Claude model unveiled a suite of plugins. These plugins, it seems, are capable of mimicking the functions of established enterprise software, causing a degree of existential angst amongst the Guild of Alchemists and Venture Capitalists.2
Why Is Palantir Stock Suddenly Catching a Breeze?
The Department of Defense, as any seasoned observer of the geopolitical landscape will confirm, is rather fond of Palantir’s software. A fondness, it must be said, that extends beyond mere utility. In the ever-shifting sands of international relations, the Middle East is currently experiencing a period of… heightened activity. Now, I am not suggesting, of course, that the U.S. military is employing Palantir’s services in any specific operation in Iran.3 However, investors, ever the pragmatists, are treating the situation as a catalyst, given the company’s long-standing ties to the Pentagon. A perfectly reasonable assumption, naturally.
Should You Acquire Shares in Palantir?
Investing in a company that provides tools for conflict during a time of conflict is, to put it mildly, speculative. One day, the stock ascends on the so-called ‘war demand,’ only to plummet the next as details emerge. It’s a bit like betting on a snail race – thrilling for a moment, but ultimately… unreliable. I generally advise against chasing momentum stocks, and when geopolitical tensions enter the equation, I become even more cautious. Right now, Palantir’s stock movements are likely being driven by short-term traders riding the waves of the Iran narrative. A rather precarious position, wouldn’t you agree?
I do, however, view Palantir as a promising long-term investment in the field of artificial intelligence. But there will be more sensible opportunities to acquire shares when the waters are calmer. Patience, as they say, is a virtue. Especially when dealing with markets. And geopolitics. And snails.
1
The SaaSpocalypse: a somewhat melodramatic term coined by analysts to describe the recent downturn in SaaS valuations. The Guild of Alchemists and Venture Capitalists are, understandably, displeased.
2
The Guild of Alchemists and Venture Capitalists: an organization dedicated to the pursuit of profit through the creation of innovative technologies. Their methods are often… unconventional.
3
The U.S. military neither confirms nor denies the use of Palantir’s software in any specific operation. This is, of course, entirely standard procedure.
