I’d happily buy Elden Ring again, even at full price, if FromSoftware added cross-progression. I was one of the first to purchase the game and I absolutely love it, but being able to continue my progress on a Switch 2 in handheld mode would be fantastic. However, I’d prefer to wait for a discount rather than being forced to start a new character from scratch.
I keep coming back to Elden Ring long after I finish it – I haven’t removed it from my PS5 since 2022! I often play just to team up with other players online or tackle a quick dungeon. While I might buy the new Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, it’s not because I need to replay the game from the beginning. I already have a playthrough going, and I’d just like to continue it on another platform.
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Would Be Perfect With Cross-Progression
Many players are worried about the upcoming Tarnished Edition because early reports suggest it runs poorly on the Switch 2. This isn’t really a surprise, though. Elden Ring has always had performance issues, even on other consoles. FromSoftware’s RPGs haven’t been known for great optimization – I still remember waiting several minutes for loading screens after dying in Bloodborne when it first came out.
I’m optimistic that the delay of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition means FromSoftware is aiming for significant improvements. Many players, like me, aren’t interested in buying the game again just for a basic port. While FromSoftware could attract new players with Elden Ring, I believe a lot of us are waiting to see if the Tarnished Edition offers enough new features to justify a second purchase.
I’ve put around 40 hours into my current Elden Ring character, and I’m still really enjoying playing with friends and just wandering around the Lands Between. Honestly, I don’t feel like starting a new character right now – I just finished the beginning areas, so it still feels fresh. It’s not that the game is doing anything wrong, but it’s a little annoying that I don’t want to replay the early parts when I’m not ready.
Cross-Progression Isn’t Likely
Currently, if you play Elden Ring, you can only continue your progress between PlayStation and Xbox consoles of different generations – for example, from a PS4 to a PS5. This also affects how the game connects players for multiplayer; true crossplay isn’t available. It’s doubtful FromSoftware will add full cross-progression or crossplay with the upcoming Tarnished Edition. While the Tarnished Edition will include bonus items for all players, a major change like letting you transfer progress between different platforms seems unlikely at this point.
Honestly, even newer games like Elden Ring Nightreign don’t have crossplay, and that’s a bummer. I’m really hoping I can pick up where I left off if Elden Ring comes to the Switch 2 – not being able to continue my progress would be a total dealbreaker for me. But honestly, I’m more worried about how well it’ll run. Performance issues would be a much bigger problem, so at this point, I’d just be happy if they can get a stable port working.
