Timothée Chalamet Rumored For Comic Book Role: Marvel’s Nova?

A recent online rumor suggests Timothée Chalamet could be joining the world of comic book movies.

A source on X (formerly Twitter), MyTimeToShineHello, reports that Timothée Chalamet is potentially in discussions to play a character in a comic book adaptation.

Although the rumor doesn’t say which character, there’s a good chance the role could be Nova from Marvel.

Marvel’s Nova Project Has Been In Development

Marvel Studios was working on a Nova series for Disney+, but it’s currently on hold because of budget issues.

Creating a visually impressive Nova show with lots of space-based effects would be expensive. Because of these costs, Marvel might decide to develop Nova as a movie instead of a streaming series.

I think Timothée Chalamet would be absolutely perfect to headline a major new series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – he’s exactly the kind of star who could really carry a cosmic-scale franchise.

Marvel Comics May Be Setting The Stage

Marvel Comics may also be laying the groundwork for Nova’s return.

Jonathan Hickman just started a new Marvel cosmic storyline called Imperial, though it hasn’t been well-received. As I’ve mentioned previously, Marvel Studios often relies on Hickman to translate their concepts into comic book form.

A clear example of this impact is Marvel’s recent announcement that Jonathan Hickman will be writing new series featuring Spider-Man, Punisher, and Hulk, coinciding with the Spider-Man: Brand New Day initiative. Hickman’s work on these titles, as well as his previous contributions to Avengers and X-Men stories, is largely due to the popularity and influence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So if Marvel Comics is pushing Nova, that likely means he’s coming to the MCU.

Infinity War Already Set Up Nova

The MCU may have already laid the groundwork for Nova.

In Avengers: Infinity War, we learn that Thanos destroyed the planet Xandar to get the Power Stone. Xandar is the home of the Nova Corps, a powerful group in the Marvel universe.

This setback could be a perfect way to reintroduce Richard Rider as the sole remaining Nova, echoing the popular comic event Annihilation from twenty years ago. This approach would also let them skip a familiar origin story for Rider, which closely resembles those of Green Lantern and Spider-Man.

I’ve been hearing whispers that Marvel might be looking at the Annihilation storyline for the MCU, and honestly, I’m so excited! It seems they could be bringing in Annihilus, a really powerful cosmic villain who’s also a classic foe of the Fantastic Four. It would be amazing to see that play out on the big screen.

Other Cosmic Characters Could Follow

If Nova does enter the MCU, it could open the door for more cosmic heroes.

As a longtime fan of cosmic Marvel, I’ve always felt Wendell Vaughn, a.k.a. Quasar, is a character ripe for inclusion in the MCU. He just fits that side of things, you know? He’s got the power set, the backstory, and frankly, we need more cosmic heroes – and Quasar is definitely one of them.

I’ve suggested Austin Butler for the role before, and Logan Paul has also expressed interest in playing Quasar. My recommendation to Feige is to avoid the more recent, politically charged versions of the character – either Phyla-Vell or the Nova who replaced the original in the comics.

There’s no confirmation yet about Timothée Chalamet joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but after the Secret Wars movie, the MCU seems to be planning a much larger and more expansive cosmic direction.
