The Deliverance Despair: Lee Daniels, Mo’Nique & Other Stars Open Up About Facing Eerie Real-Life Mishaps While Filming Horror Movie

As a devoted follower of the enigmatic world of filmmaking, I find myself constantly captivated by the tales that unfold behind the silver screen – and none more intriguing than the tumultuous journey of Lee Daniels’ latest venture, The Deliverance. With a career steeped in the supernatural, it was only fitting for Daniels to call upon a deliverer on set, drawing inspiration from the hallowed grounds of The Exorcist and Poltergeist.

Despite Lee Daniels’ attempts to shield himself and the production of Netflix horror film ‘The Deliverance’ from bad luck using prayer circles, a string of unfortunate incidents still disrupted the filming process. In a recent conversation with SiriusXM’s Bevy Smith during a town hall interview, Daniels shared that he had a deliverer on set, drawing inspiration from tales of supernatural occurrences on the sets of ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Poltergeist’. Regardless of his fervent prayers, several unsettling events transpired, such as one of his actors being hospitalized and his beloved pet passing away.

Daniels acknowledged that although the prayer sessions were “truly captivating and I believe they were beneficial,” they weren’t sufficient to prevent the series of issues that arose during the production. “Incidents occur, and I wasn’t going to allow incidents on my set, and also I needed it for myself,” Daniels stated. Despite his best efforts, the set of The Deliverance encountered numerous difficulties.

Daniel shared an emotional tale about his sister, who has been present in every movie he’s directed as a good-luck charm. Later, Glenn Close’s sibling was diagnosed with lung cancer following their scene together in The Deliverance. Additionally, Daniel opened up about the passing of his beloved pet on set.

In her own words, Mo’Nique, one of the main actors, disclosed an incident during the filming process. She detailed that while shooting a particular scene with Mr. Daniels, they were working outdoors, and subsequently, she required hospitalization.

In the course of events, I had been led to believe that the demon was stationed atop a building. Yet, they persisted in detonating these devices—to put it mildly, at a particular juncture, I found myself uttering, “Lee, do we really need this racket? I can’t even catch my breath.” The noise continued. He retorted, “Just one more time. One more time.” Eventually, when the cacophony subsided, I was left in a state where my thyroid felt quite compromised, to say the least. I found myself questioning the sanity of the situation, muttering, “What on earth is going on here?” Needless to say, The Deliverance proved to be an extraordinary experience.

A significant number of people on the film set, including Glenn Close, had not previously taken part in prayer circles. Close herself admitted it was an extraordinary experience, yet she clarified that it was her debut at praying within a circle on a movie set. She explained how Daniels would announce these prayer sessions and allow everyone to decide whether or not they wanted to join.

I found it astonishing when Lee announced, “Alright, let’s take a moment to pray. Anyone who’d like to join us can, we’re starting now.” Everyone understood the situation clearly, and regardless of whether everyone chose to participate or not, the essence remained unchanged.

The story, “The Deliverance,” focuses on a family in Indiana as they face bizarre, seemingly supernatural events, causing them and the surrounding community to suspect that their house serves as a gateway to the underworld.

The disturbing and unsettling themes in the movie might have contributed to a feeling of discomfort during its creation. However, despite the difficulties, the team remained determined, aiming for a compelling end result as Daniels envisions it.
